In ND, I'd think being a cop is all about helping people. Lord knows there's so little crime that you would rarely be doing much investigation and that kind of thing.
I actually know where Beach, ND is!
If I were you, I ditch the great state of ND and head to MN for both of your careers. I love ND, and it's truly a "buyer's market" for jobs right now, with the labor shortage and all. But the small towns are drying up, the population isn't expanding, and everyone seems to be moving to the cities.
As some of you know, I've applied to become a Fed. I happen to think that I'd enjoy the FBI a great deal and I like the idea of investigation vs. responding to calls because Billy Bob let his 7 yr old son operate the table saw. Pay and bennies for the Feds seem plenty good from what I can tell, though the fitness test is probably a little more stringent than other LEO outfits might be (judging by many of the cops I've seen )
I should find out this week if I am headed to Quantico in the future or not.

I worked for the State Patrol for 6 years as a dispatcher. The Troopers in Wisconsin don't respond to 911 calls and enforce only traffic laws, patrol the highways and respond to accidents and disabled vehicles. They get their own cruiser that they get to take home, and the state pays for all their training and equipment. It's a pretty good deal.
But I think the sweetest gig is being a state Motor Carrier Inspector. You work around the commercial trucks all day either at either a scale station or with portable scales. They have minimal interaction with the general public and deal mainly with the truck drivers. I know of several veteran Troopers who switched to being Inspectors as they enjoy it more. I had to do things over again that's the route I would have gone.

CF when I started as a LEO the advise to me was this. All the PDs in this county were under the county personnel board. The department of choice, Homewood, was not hiring at the time I took the personnel board's test. I was advised to pick another department, Birmingham, because it was always hiring and once in the system it was easier to do a lateral move than to hire in. This made sense because they only gave the personnel board test about every 2 - 2 1/2 years. As it happened, I did get a call from Birmingham who hired me verbally but could not make it official until they hired 7 other people to meet the federal quota. The County Sheriff's Office called next but it was corrections only so I turned them down. The next call was from Homewood, guess where I went. From the time I took the test until hire was about 20 months. One other point, departments in our area pay an additional 10% with a 4 year CJ degree. Ask about it. The top 3 departments in the Birmingham metro area all pay in the $50-52 range annually once topped out and that takes 7 years I believe.

Thankless job, under payed, politics, kids taught from a young age to disrespect you, did I mention the pay?
I think Cops and Teachers should start out around the $70K mark, top out over $100K, plus they should ALL have a 20 and done option.
I know a few retired Troopers, they do okay pension wise, the main benefit I see with them (quality of life wise) was that they had the opportunity to get the heck out in their mid 40's/ early 50's and move on to other careers or part time gigs.
Want to be a cop? Go to Detroit or Baltimore City. They contain some of the roughest districts in the whole US. You'll see more action in two months than some LEO's see in 25 years.

Well if you want to be paid some of the top money come out to california, bein trying to get with the local department in my hometown of Santa Clara, CA. I have a buddy who just got on and is rolling! Granted the cost of living is waaaay more here, but he is making 98k BASE! Thats right, no ot, call backs etc. This guy is not even out of probation yet and he is making that coin. Should get to about 150k this year all said and done! So I am working my way there, just takes time.
