When to sell a car?
I've got a 96' Subaru Legacy with 185,000 miles on er. Car runs great since I got it with 119,000 miles. I've never changed the timing belt or done anything but replace the clutch. Car uses a quart of oil every 1000 miles, but a compression test shows good pressure. I keep thinking the car can't go much further, so I'm tempted to sell while she still runs and needs no major service. Should I run it into the ground or get out while it's still worth something? Perhaps I'm just trying to justify getting an Outback because I want something more offroad capable and can easily afford it.

Get what you want, the Outback. See what you can get on trade on the old car. That age and milage usually don't get much$$$. Will the Outback be brand new?

I will never trade a car in. You get much more money selling it privately. I'm also wanting to buy an Outback private party around model year 2000.
Another way I'm trying to justify another car is to get cruise control. My speed often fluctuates when I drive home from work at 1am from a 13hr work day. With cruise I won't have to worry about accidentally going 85mph and getting a ticket.

I would definitely try to run it into the ground-if the compression test is good, the 1qt/1000mi of oil must be going somewhere though. Check sites like KBB and NADA for value if you still want to sell it-my guess is its not going to be worth much, but could always hold value as a 2nd vehicle in case the truck needs repair.
