The bigger the rod the more porosity it holds.

I have been around MANY oldtimers and they NEVER use anything over 5/32 for x-rays.
Most of my work is xrayed. I am not sure where the info came from the bigger the rod the more porosity. That is not true. That is if the rods are stored properly.
I am an old timer, and I was taught by the last generation of old timers. They all used the big rods, one would get disapproving looks if ya couldn't keep up with them.I find these days a lot of the young ones don't go over 1/8 rod. On inspected pipe welds, 5/32 from 6 to 3/9 oclock then pour the big rod from 3/9 to 12.oclock. 3/16 would be used on pipe like 8 inches and bigger. But the 5/32 4 inch sched 80 and up.
Refinery welds or nuke welds are all the same. If the code says a clean and perfect welds, then that is what it has to be. If there is to be a difference in strength then that would come from the material.

spray arc welding is fast, but you better have a pair of water cooled gloves.

Not too shabby. But then I'm use to seeing nuclear welds here at the station. These guys weld up Sch 160 SS and it looks like the beads were drawn in there by computer. I could never get that good in 100 years. Of course the pay ain't too shabby either for those guys.
We use photogrametry a lot for pre-fabbing some set ups and on radius piping too. Knocks a lot of time out in the beginning.

Very nice welding.... like it was said before you not only need a steady hand you need a good eye for it also.

And No Ironworker's are not the ones who use 3/32" rods because we do everything flat! Try welding up a moment connection 240' in the air hanging off the side of the building upside down! LOL

Seriously though keep up the good work and if you ever need a job you could join the Ironworkers union!
