Jim Lane, I designed/installed/serviced hi tech alarms in New orleans for 9 years. Finally had enough, was living basically the same way you are. Now live an hour out of St Louis, no need to lock anything out here.

The biggest problem in my neighborhood is graffitti(not much) but ....it really pisses me off. I live in pretty much the most expensive zip code in south NV and these kids are just bad. You can t buy a house even close for under 380k...most are 550+. But that doesn t change the kids. They are still out all night sneak out, do drugs, graffitti, etc etc....I think to many people look the other way and say "not my problem"
I started panting over the graffitti the day after it happened, and what do you know, it basically stopped. No payoff, they don t get to look at it.
I do worry about home security. Im realatively by myself, neighbors are to far away to hear anything or care even if they did. I plan on a security gate out front, (have the wall done) and some cameras etc...

be safe from criminals
I think that if we put the criminals in leadership [ government & buisness ] in prison than it would be easy to deal with the ones in the street , if you start at the top then others will follow , when you have a ture free freemaket then people may not lean towrds criminal means . [ fair buisness practice and the ability to defend yourself with resonable legal response].

Things in a lot of rural Saskatchewan are getting worse and worse. My wife works with the kids that are the worst of the worst. Some are victim of circumstances and some have chosen their path. They kill for gang acceptance, kill, steal and hurt people for their clothes on their back...in Public Parks!
Child pregnancies...Crystal Meth...its rampant.
The small town I once lived in all of a sudden had 3 crack houses on the same block...I would count 40-70 cars per day at EACH of these houses.
Cops said they know about them but do nothing in our area...theres a line they are scared to cross due to some racial profiling as the perps say. I could not take it anymore. Waking up to passed out people in the yard, people knocking on the door, wrong house, kicking my garage door...and I call the cops and when they get there they tell me to cool down on my racial comments...none of which were racial. I simply said; "Take this Indian back to his Reserve."
And for some reason, even though there was only myself two cops [one was native] and the wasted guy kickin the garage door, word got around town about that comment. Gee, wonder where that came from.
The native gangs here have done some real crazy stuff and nobody seems to be able to alter its course or catch the ones doing the kidnappings and murders of children. One kid has been missing for over a year, another was burned in her house and nobody knows anything...yeah right.
Whoops, I got carried away. I hope I did not infringe on any of the rules but I am tired of how this kind of stuff gets swept under the rug. Its a different story when it comes into your own home.

Worst thing that happens in Claremont is a stampeding herd of wild Opossums. Had to take a switch to one last night. The Shepard and the Pit Bull had it cornered in the yard and none of the three were backing down. Finally got the dogs called off and chased the hairy varmit out of the yard. The vehicles are usually locked mainly just for insurance reasons. You can get in the house but you have to get past the two Rotties, the Shepard, and the Pit Bull and there is a gun within six feet of wherver I sit inside the house.
One thing I can't figure out though, I never get a lot of company at the house.

Jim,
Thanks for telling your experience. No palace is completly safe. We moved from a "Nice neighbor" in Seattle. Reason, 3 times in one year, yellow tape, crime sciene do not cross," blocked the street to the house. One time wife could not come home or get out of car, the dogs k-9 were searching. Bank robber, shooting.
Sedro Woolley much safer.
Now the RV resort in AZ should be even safer. Walled area, and manned entrece gate.
Still, I have a CCW permit, and carry. When traving don't go thru states where my permit is not recognized. Won't go thru California for that reason. My Utah permit is valid in several states. More the the WA permit.
States where an honest citizen has had the right to defend themself taken way the criminal and thugs have easy pickens. IMHO.
Be safe out there.
