Washing machine help
I think my wife sabatoged the washing machine because she wants one of those fancy front loaders. The dang thing won't spin and drain the water out. I can hear the motor humming and I can't turn it by hand so it sounds to me like something has locked up on it. I took it apart looking for a belt but I guess it's a direct drive. The aigitator will spin but not the part on the bottom of the drum. Any ideas? Are they even worth messing with money wise?
Oh yeah, it's a fancy top load Kitchen Aid.

There should be a flexable coupler between the motor and drum underneathy with some kind of transmission. The coupler can break and cause the drum not to spin. They are replaceble.

Like ofmarc says you can tell real quick if that is the issue, they usually leave little chunks of plastic where they beat them selves to pieces. mine had a small pile of black plastic chips on the floor under it.
I had to run out and buy a new machine because my wife was leaving for College and would be gone 2 weeks. Naturally the part was not available locally and she needed her clothes cleaned NOW.
9 days later I had the part in hand after ordering from the Internet for about $8.00 I think. A couple bolts and the motor slides away from the tranny and the new "ujoint" pops on.
My freshly married nephew ends up with a great washer for the cost of coming and getting it. Everybody is happy except my wallet lol

I am sure that this will annoy some but 99% of washers, regardless of the brand, use the same power train. If you are on a short budget, the capabilities are endless. Three or four of them in the back yard and you can keep one going. But purchasing one used is pretty safe and $25 to $50 will usually get you a running machine.

It won't spin at all but I did find out that I could turn the drum by hand. I took the outer skin off and the motor sounds bad. There is a front shaft that turns a water pump and its working but I can't see the rear of the motor to see if its turning the transmission. I think its somthing in the motor.

If she is health consious even remotely just look up front load washing machines and mold issues and she will not want one anymore! There was a big deal on the local news about it. Something about the way the water can get trapped in the doors or something. No one likes mold do they?
Here is just one.

STAY AWAY FROM MAYTAG. The neptune has a class action lawsuit pending. I have one and have replaced 99% of all the parts and it still is junk.

Oh my what just happened??? First we went to Sears and of course they didn't have anything in stock but would have it in 3-6 days, but I'm running out of drawers so thats no good. So we go to a small dealer and hes got just what I wanted...one of these http://www.amazon.com/Electrolux-EIF.../dp/B001FCMODS with a matching dryer. Although I didn't pay what amazon is asking, I still paid ALOT...but the little wifey is happy and if Mama is happy, the whole family is happy. Oh well, there goes my new toyhauler but at least my skids will be gone.
