Vinyl Siding in the MidWest

Hey guys,
Living in the MidWest is a new experience for me. Living in a house with Vinyl siding is also a new experience for me.

Over the past month to month and a half, we've noticed that there is a mold or mildew appearing on the vinyl sided eves and recently there is mildew/mold growing on the composit roofing shingles.
I got up on the roof today and scrubbed a section of the eves. Most of the dirt came off but the mildew/mold stayed.
I also tried to get the mildew/mold off the shingles with even less luck.

So I ask all of you, how do you clean vinyl siding and shingles in a hot and humid environment?

Rich.

I dont have that problem on my roof or wood siding, the rock around my house however does have some mildew growing on it. Try some simple green and a pressure washer to remove the mildew if it bothers you.

I cut household bleach with water 50/50.
Spray it on, hit it with a brush, then wash it off.
Be careful using bleach around flower beds though.

Shovel's plan for siding will work, but there are commerically available products the might be better, easier on the soil. Either one, spray it on and hose it off.

For the roof don't use bleach. It's too harsh. If I remember right cooper sulfate works best. It comes in commercially available hose applicators also. Most folks around here don't even bother though, makes the house look rustic and kewl to me.

So how do you like the Big MO? The Show Me State, Land of Truman, Home of Jessie James.

The weather leaves much to be desired.
I was born and raised on the desert high planes where the air is dry and clear. (well, most of the time)

Aside from the weather, Im really liking it here so far. We found a little community to live in, and its good to be back in a small community that still has much of its traditions and hasnt lost site of its roots.

Looking forward to getting out and around the reqion (once the weather cools a bit.)

I was doing some research and found a site that claims a 30/70 mix of vinegar to water will also take care of the vinyl.
May try that this week.

Thanks guys.
Rich.

Behr makes a deck and siding cleaner that I get from Home Depot. It is a white bottle with a red lable for $2-3/gal. Works really well and usually don't have to scrub at all. The run off water will also strip the water treatment off of the deck if you don't wash it down quickly.

I've used the vinegar/water mix and the commercially available stuff from wally world. I use my pressure washer with either option. Don't you just love our Missouri humidity. It looked foggy this morning but I'm sure it was just humidity. I'm surprised we don't have mold growing on the asphalt.

Oh, just wait till the spring storms get back.

Mold and mildew is a fact of life in this area. if you look around, you will probably see every has that problem and just leaves it...

Kinda like rust. you let your fence rust and leave it, it stopps rusting.

What Ed said. 50/50 bleach will do it.
