I think gm/isuzu have done an admirable job of getting the duramax to be a good powerful engine in a short time. One thing to remember when it comes to which engine needs what parts to stay together at a give power is-the cummins is a medium duty engine and the duramax is a light duty engine. One shouldn't EXPECT the duramax to take as much power as the cummins.

Fairly certain the DMax is medium-duty rated - it's been available only in the 3500, 4500, and 6500 series chassis, and which kept it out of the 2500 Suburban and Tahoe chassis.

The duramax is available in the 2500 trucks as well. Furthermore, the powerstroke, which is also light duty, is available all the way up to the f750. No, the duramax is categorized as a light duty engine-which is fine, nothing wrong with that.

Chop 2 cylinders off the cummins and you still find it in dozers, backhoes, delivery trucks, etc. Is it still classified med. duty or light?

The classification has to do with EPA and taxes - classified as lite duty you get to install EGR, Catalytic Convertor, mufflers with resonators, restrictive exhaust, and pay consumer vehicle tarriffs.

But - you get to put the engine in 1500 and 2500 series chassis

Medium duty gets only commercial EPA restrictions and taxation, but your consumer grocery getters and Tahoes and Suburbans have to go the gasoline route - a real stone in the consumer's collective craw for the past several years.

Check the figures on how many 1500s, 2500s, Tahoes and Suburbans got the DMax since back in ought two, and exactly when they began installing the DMax in those venues.
