Tree Removal
I have a 30' pine in the backyard that died. It is right next to the pool deck. My yard is accessible through a double gate, so a truck can get in there. Its my rental home, so Im at the mercy of the "service professionals" that I call. Last quote I got to cut it down and haul off the trunk and the top was $500. I think that is a little rediculous. Anybody do this for a living and can tell me what a fair price is? Thanks.

I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!
Actually that sounds about right, Assuming it is a reputable company, they clean up their mess, and are properly insured and licensed. Make sure you verify the insurance and licensing. Your insurance company may give you hassles if they muck something up, and they are not properly credentialed.

I had a quote for a guy to cut down four trees, not haul the tops off though, and that was $500. Im not tracking on this deal. I know the tops are work to get rid of, but $500 a tree?

We have a tree company that parks here at the farm. They've never had an accident of any kind, much less a claim. Their liability insurance runs them about 5500 a month. That doesn't include the employees' wages, workmans comp, insurance on the trucks themselves or maintenance on the trucks and equipment. It also doesn't include fuel for the trucks, fuel for the saws, maintenance on the saws, tipping fee's to get rid of the chips/brush and useless logs nor all the little things that just happen to come up unexpectedly. When they were setting up this business I remember trying to help them figure out their costs so they knew what they had to charge, either by the day or the hour. This was 3 years ago and at that point, they needed to make just a hair over a grand a day to meet expenses. Anything on top of that would be profit. Maybe things are cheaper in TX, but knowing what I know, $500 seems reasonable to me.

Cut your losses and go for it. I had a 50ft pecan tree that was sick AND leaning towards the house. The cheapest quote I got was $1500. I ended up renting a manlift from Home Depot for $175 and having the stump ground for $100. I would have had someone else do it in a heartbeat for $500!

put an ad on Craigslist to cut it down for the firewood.
That or go to Home depot and buy an electric chainsaw for 60 bucks. cut it down yourself. To get rid of the stump...Light it on fire with a propane torch. Then turn a fan onto it and it will totally burn the tree until it is 8 inches underground.

A skilled tree crew is worth the money they charge.
They should be able to cut down and haul the tree away without damaging your pool deck, or anything else.
They are not just "guys with saws", which you are likely to get on Craigslist.

Yea Too bad you aren't in Texas. I'd do it for you. Just got done cuttin down 3 30-40' cedars and hauling them off. Bid $300 on the job. Had 2 friends help, split the money 3 ways and got the trees down and hauled off in 4 hrs. Comes out to around $21-22 bucks an hr. Don't have insurance but most don't around here either but the big companies like McCoy Tree Surgery, and they quoted $1,250 to do the same job.
