Toyota Tacoma people
The wife has been thinking of going to look at the Tacomas and I was wondering if anybody here has a new or almost new one and what kind of real world mileage do these trucks get? She (we) would be looking at the 4 door. I'm not sure the name of it but it is the one with the 4 bigger doors if that make sense.
Thanks for any info.

Prerunners are 2wd that are jacked up to look like 4x4's.
My dad has a 00 4x4 extra cab. 4cyl 5 speed. Its got hubs in the front. He constantly gets 24mpg with it. We towed a 85 toyota pickup on a car dolly with it for 200 miles and got 16mpg. The truck has 230k on it and its had nothing done to the motor. Only ever done shocks and brakes.
My mom drives a 04 4runner, same engine/trany/frame as the tacoma, just a different body. It's got the 245hp 4.0l with a 4 spee auto trany. In the winter it gets about 20mpg and in the summer 23. Burnt a tank of fuel the quickets i could one time. Every time I took off it was pegged, and it was shut down a few times. Just drove it as hard as i could to see what it would get, ended up with 17mpg. And on highway trips we saw 25 on a tank.
My .019 cents is that toyota makes the best all around compact truck

06, 4X4, 4 Full Doors, SWB, V6, Highway ='s 18mpg and 14 to 16 in the City/Highway! Make sure that she gets the Higher Gear Ratio if possible 3.58 I think....... The manuals can get better with the 3.38 and the 6 speed maual!

Well, I will jump in here even tho I dont have a Taco.
My 00 Frontier gets 18 to 20 depending on season.
My 06 Xterra gets about 18 on the highway in the summer. Some of the guys at TUNFS are claiming 22 out of their 05+ trucks.

Thanks guys for the replies so far. That is just the kind of info I needed. It will probably be an 06, (or 07) 4X4, 4 Full Doors, SWB, V6 like Boost described. I did not know about the different gear ratios. I'll keep an eye out for that when looking.
Anybody else have some real world MPG figures??
What kind of engine mods can be done to these Tacomas?
Knowing my wife like I do she will also want to put a lift and slightly larger tires on it. I know this affects mileage but if I could get some of it back with engine and/or intake mods I'll do it.

Several, well ~ 4 guys I work with have them and they've had them for a few years. I'll ask them tomorrow, but I bet they'll only be able to give ball park figures. None of them are car/truck guys. Gee, probably why they're driving Tacoma's.

I agree with that statment!! You can get an equally equipped Frontier for 3 to 4k less and have a faster and better offroading truck in my opinion.....

Nissan/Datsun had a black eye for a while after the name change in the US. but really, their vehicles have always been good quality, nice fit and finish, and reliable. I have 120K on my frontier. Lifetime maintenance excluding fluid changes is about $600. Timing belt 20K ago, brakes, a battery, and a set of tires (needs another set). not bad if you ask me.
