toyota 22re gasser questions

My dad, and i just traded 100 square bales of hay(already delivered) to these people for an 80's model(i think) toyota 4wd with a 4 cylinder 22re motor, and 5spd transmission. The man said it runs good, but gets water in the oil which i know is not good. He has already had the head gasket replaced twice, and the second time the head was shaved. It ran for about a month from what he said, and then started getting water in the oil again. Dad was thinking of selling it, but i would personally love to keep it, and get it running right, and make a fourwheeling truck out of it. Those little toyotas go good, and i would love to get it running to fourwheel with, and maybe even drive to school some when i get my liscence. Any ideas of what the problem may be, and why? Thanks for any help. PS: We dont have the truck home yet, so i cant check it out too good yet.

well its probly still head gskt related...if you do not take the time to clean op the matting surfaces PERFECTLY you have just cause for failure.#2-you can preasure test it with head on and see if that reveals the culprit.
#3 preasure check the head when its off...by now you will know where the problem is

I have had many of the 22re engines. Replaced one head gasket on and 88 4-runner. In some cases the timing chain tensioners break and the chain will actually slap the block and creat a hole. This will cause water to get in the oil. Changing the head gaske will not help with this though. GOOD LUCK if you get itr running you will love it. They are almost unstoppable off-road .

He may have run it hot. Deck the block(?) ...get new head or what ever else. You could invest a little $$$ and have tires, shocks, and motor repair. You would then have a fun and mostly reliable truck.

I would repair and keep it. A solid axel Toyota is a good off-road truck. There are lots of parts for the 22re. Have fun with it. 85 is the best year to have and the last year for the solid axel...If that is what you have....remember this if you decide to sell it. It will bring more money....FWIW.

Thanks for all the help guys! Well, im still not sure what year it is, but it has IFS, so im guessing its a later model than an 85 . Oh well though, i bet it still goes just as good or better in mud, probably just wont rock crawl as well. If i get it running, when i get my liscence ill load it up behind the cummins, and take it fourwheeling sometime. Thanks for the cool site shovelhead, that is pretty cool; I guess you can BOMB about anything . Just more fun with diesels . I wouldnt mind putting a little money into it, just dont want to spend a lot on it. If i can get it running right, ill be happy with it .Thanks for all the help guys.

AAHHHHHHH The yota engine! I have owned a few and yes they 4x like no other truck out there, ( dog has a 87 in the drivway ) anyway, you still have a head or a block problem and niegther are worth dumping money into. You can get a long block yota with 30,000 miles on it for around 300-400 bucks, the most it cost me to buy and ship one up here to alaska was around $500.00. The y come complete. In Japan they have to "replace" their engine at 30,000 miles for emissions. Nothing wrong with the engines and I have never had one be bad or anything wrong with it. It's a place out of seattle, if I remember right it's called

If I find the paper work I'll let you know, I need to get a motor coming for this little toy here.

excellent point 02dieseldog! did not think about the used motors. 300 - 500 is the going rate. I had an 81 and checked into a used long block. even with the IFS, you can make them tough. There are porsche half shafts or whole shafts or something that are very tough and can run at more extreme angles....these are kinda expensive though. Maybe a future BOMB present.....

I have a couple of pictures(if they work), and some more info. It is an 88 model with 245,000 mileson it. $500 is not bad at all if they run decent for a newer motor, and if i got it running, it would be wort way more than what we gave for it. Here is a picture of it behind the big CUMMINS.
