In Hoss’s case, as neurotic as his is, he probably chews his fingernails so he could switch to his toenails and give his fingernails a break.

While I truely hate to ruin the incredibly intellegent conversation that this is, I'll zip up my flame suit and tell you guys that toenails are the vestigal remains of claws which are ancient ancestors used to climb trees and catch prey.
And what do you think of dat?

With all the useful information here, I chose to open THIS thread.
And as if the picture of Hoss in the shower weren't enough, someone has to go and offer up the image of him in a THONG.
Well, it really ain't funny until someone throws up, so how about this; Hoss in his thong, laying seductively on his concrete bedliner in the back of his truck, hair still damp from his shower, while getting a pedicure complete with pink nail polish and a leg wax.
