Just started doing this yesterday for no reason at all.
It is intermittent right now but I can see the writing on the wall. Looks like it's time for a new one since this one is WAY out of warranty. This sucks because I'm on vacation right now and didn't plan on doing much except playing online. Looks like I have other plans now
Oh well.... It could be worse.

Are you talking about the red light pattern around the power button? If so, it means the box might be screwed up, or having some kind of internal problems.
I was into the whole XBOX MOD scene with the old XBOXs but I got bored with it. But on the old model boxes, internal errors were signaled by different light patterns and color codes around the power button.
Id find someone in your area who can modify 360s cause if it is fried, no point in spending the money to get it fixed or to buy a new one. Might as well get it moded and end up with something better than you started off with.

Believe me…. The thought did cross my mind. I would be gaining the cool black color, HDMI, and a larger hard drive. But since I connect with a VGA cable to my HDTV and I really don’t need the larger HD. I really wouldn’t be gaining anything but the color. But did I say that Black is cool???
It’s about to burst into flames.

Like nirion said, I can’t play online if I mod this one. Besides Moding is cheating. I prefer to play fair. If I win then I am better then you. If you win, you’re better than me.
