Hmm, I wonder if one of those screw extractors would work in your situation?? Julst drill a pilot hole in the bolt, get out the drill and reverse screw in the extractor and Voila!??? I know that Canadian Tire has 'emm for around 20 bucks or so. If not at least it would give you more meat to grab onto wtih the vise grips!

Had one of those riv nuts spin on me once on a roof rack.
Try this, can you get the trim piece off of the a pilar?
If so, take a small chisel and hit the side of the riv nut so it distorts it enough so it won't spin.
Then weld another bolt or some sort of steel to it so you can grab hold of it.
Hope this helps.

I will try and take a picture of this thing that is called a retainer, bung, riv, brass thingy and...a few other words not allowed on here.
It sits flush with the steel pillar and is stamped in or pressed in from the back side. Will try and get pix of it tomorrow. I tried hammering it all into the pillar, no luck...I even had a wire wrapped around the bolt so I could at least stop it from disappearing down the pillar. Not really sure what I was going to do if I did knock it into the inside of the pillar though.
Easy outs and other bolt removers do not work as its stripped within the threads of the bung and the threads are stripped on both the bolt and the bung thingy.

I imagine if the bung is brass then the treads on it are stripped and not the bolt right?
How about pin the bung to the bolt with a punch or JB weld then drill and retap the bolt one size smaller? That might give you enough meat to cut new threads into?
