Straight Razors....Who's brave enough to use them?
Well the wife, the kids and I took a trip to Denver and I went into a store called "The Art Of Shaving". I've been curious about using a straight razor to shave with for some time now. I talked with the salesman, who was actually honest and didn't try to sell me the most expensive thing in the place, and he recommended a good starter. I tried it out today and man is it different. It took about 25 minutes to finish. I only nicked myself twice . The shave was way better than my Mach 3 or Fusion (waste of money). It's close enough to smooth out my skin and be a bit tender afterwards (watch out for the aftershave ). I'm pretty much sold on this being the way to shave from now on. Of course the initial cost is pretty high, but not having to buy blades anymore is nice. It also makes shaving less mundane. Anyone else brave enough to try one?

I have an electric that I use occationally...
I usually just run over my face about once a week with trimmers and make it look like I haven't shaved in a day or two...

I'm not much for shaving either, but I have to being in the military. After 10 years of having to shave I wanted a change.

Never tried one. I usually buzz my face every morning with an electric at work. Sometimes I use a razor (sensor XL) at home. I find the electric much quicker and easier, even though it doesn't get as close as a blade. You have me interested in a straight blade Trevor. I am going to look into it.
I think we may have to change your user name to Sweeney Todd, lol.

I've used a straight razor off and on for a few years now. I hate to shave, so a straght razor works to take off several months of growth.
E-Bay is a great source for supplies. Be sure to get a strop and a couple of good razor hones. It seems that regular knife stones are too coarse to sharpen a razor. I used a fine diamond sharpener for a long time and was surprised at the difference when I finally got a proper hone.
Keep it sharp and take your time, and enjoy not buying blades for the gillette.

BTW, if anyone is thinking of spending the 50 bucks on the Braun self cleaning blah blah blah , dont waste your money!!! that thing sux! my 40 dollar remington with a 5 year old blade cuts better then that pos

I used to do the straight razor-- had the strop and all that.
It worked really well. I got a nick in the blade and ruined it trying to fix it-- I never went back to it.
I've since learned that a quality shave isn't in the blade-- it's in the prep.
Soak your face with a very warm wet towel. Hold it on your face for a couple minutes. As hot as you are comfortable with is good.
Then, put a couple drops of shaving oil on your hand and work it into your face. Then I put on a non-foaming shave slime and add a tiny bit of regular shave cream.
After all this, a regular gilette or Shick razor will give you a fantastic shave.
