Stolen Tailgates Lately

I have never had a reason to take my tailgate off until the other night. My friend and I were unloading a 460lb V6 from a Taurus SHO out of the back of my truck by hand. I don't know if we could have done it with the tailgate on there.

Put a cable on the spare and a security hose clamp on the tailgate. The security screws down with an allen shaped screw with a pin in the center of it. Can't get it off with a screwdriver or an allen wrench. While doing all this get two rods for stoppers of the rear sliding glass windows and a plate to put in the door under the door handle so it can't be popped. Almost forgot, a "Jimmy Jammer" for the door also! Thieves should be horse whipped!!

I read about this and I sure would hate if my got stolen. I may clamp new cables without the quick detaches and bolt them on.
How do they sell them? I guess, steal ten of them and then sell them to the guys you stole from, switching them around to make them bring the gates to your brother-in-law's paint shop to repaint them?... Clue: look for a body shop that offers to repaint tailgates.

I always pull my tailgate when pulling a gooseneck... Just in case anything were to come loose, it would be one less thing to get tore up.

When I hook up to the GN the tailgate comes off... When I unhook, the tg goes back on. So, its hard to say what affects mileage the most - no tailgate and trailer, or no trailer and tailgate. 80% of my driving is with a tailgate and the Leer... Keeps the tools dry. I'll average 18 or so, which is all highway driving, keeping it under 60. I've got the camper off this week and I have to fuel up tonight. I'll run it a week w/ the tg, then pull the tg next week and compare the two... I'll keep ya'll posted.

mythbuster did the MPG tailgate,
the sharp edge of the tailgate breaks the suction of the wind, and lets the truck get away from the air
only like one body style of F-150 actually did better with the gate down, lot's of threads on here about it.
