Stolen Tailgates Lately
Man what is with all the tailgates being stolen latley? I know three people who have had their tailgates stolen and they did a story on the local news about them getting swiped. They said a local Chevy dealer had 15 stolen off their lot. Glad I got a lock for mine.
My neighbors friend's was swiped and it cost him a grand to get it replaced and painted.

My daughter was in her new dodge at a restaurant, came out from eating and someone had stolen hers while she was eating. The cop they talked to said it was the number one item right now being stolen. Said they could steal one and sell it for $300.00 bucks all day long......

i asked my deaqler about this while i was there today, he told me they lost 23 tailgates and 19 spares in the same night, and another dealer lost almost double that on the same night also. he said the tires that moslty were stolen were from the hemi with 20's, the just snipped the retractor wire and rolled off with the spares.now they pull the spares untill delivery and back the trucks up tight to a fence or to another truck almost bumber to bumper.

I was in Pierre, SD - at the Cheateau (definately not as fancy as it sounds). I came out at 2 a.m. and found the t/g intact, but they got away w/ half the dodge emblem... Tailgate locks are cheap.
Speaking of - anyone got a tailgate emblem for sale?

Central Dodge, dealership here in MO, had a streak of stolen t/g's a few years ago... Cops found a couple guys on the lot one night, with a van-full. They shackled them, drug them before the judge. Prosecuter pushed and pushed, but they got away scott free - cause they hadn't actually left the lot with the stuff.

I saw a deal on the web about how they are untraceable so people can sale em nearly anywhere whithout being linked back to the truck they came off of, they are the #1 stolen truck accesory right now. Ebay, newspaper, even autotrader.

I have a hose clamp on my old Ford 6.9, a thief could get it easy enough if he had a screwdriver, but I figure they won't bother.
Never even thought about my Dodge , I'll have to look tomorrow
and see if it will work.

I second the stainless 1.5" hose clamp around the slotted hinge on the right side. You can use a long screw driver and tighten the clamp from under the truck and make it more difficult for the thief.

just put a hose clamp around the female end of the hinge that has the opening...thief isn't going to mess with taking a hose clamp off when the truck down the road doesn't have anything...

Follow up question... How many people take their tailgates off for any reason? Is there a piece you could screw to the tailgate to keep it from coming off? Maybe with security screws?
