Static Electricity!!!

BE CAREFUL GUYS!!!!
If you every haul any type of fuel container in the back of you truck make sure it is secured so it won't move. I thought I had and it wasn't good enough, can fell over and came open, then caught fire and may have totalled my 01 Ram last night. It's a scary feeling riding down the road, going home from work at 11:30, and see fire in your rear view mirror which was "Closer that it appeared." The fire department found cause to be static electrical discharge.

Re:Static Electricity!!!

I hate static shocks!!! Have learned when I get out of my truck to hold the key tightly and touch the key to the side of the door first. Sometimes you can hear the spark jump. Wonder why these trucks are so prone to static electricity. BTW, in my case it is not cold that is aggravating the situation as I have it just as much at 100 degrees F.

Re:Static Electricity!!!

My truck has conditioned me to not touch it on the way out too.
Isn't there a product that you can spary on cloth that elimnates static cling/shock? Scotch Guard maybe? Just can't quite remember what it's called.

Re:Static Electricity!!!

I just watched a news special on static electricity the other night. Showed this guy pumping fuel into cans in the bed of his truck and the thing went up like a match. The poor dude was burned over 75% of his body. Usually the static will be discarged buy touching the pump, but they say the worst thing to do is get back in the vechicle while pumping fuel this gives you a new static charge then when you touch the pump BOMB !!!

I have the Premium Cloth seats in my Ram but have the Mopar seat covers on, and only get the charge when I don't have the covers installed. I Scotch Guard the covers so I think that makes the difference.

You may also want to invest in one of these to Buddybar.com, really makes it easy to keep fuel cans and propane bottles from rolling around in the bed. 8)

Glad you're alright Bneaves, but sorry about the truck.

DB

Re:Static Electricity!!!

Another thing to remember is to NEVER refuel a can while it's sitting in the bed/trunk of a vehicle.
That's how the Guy at the AAFES gas station got burned.
Take it out and sit it on the ground to avoid a static discharge.
Re:Static Electricity!!!

I had a guy put two gallonns of fuel treatment in the back of my truck one day. I forgot about it and smelled something hot when I stopped. The one container had slid under the tool box and up against the pipes in the bed. It had melted the plastic jug and was hot enough I could hardly pick up the container. Won't do that again.
