SMASHED deer and When does Insurance Co. decide to "total" a vehical

I hit a deer last night and really banged up my truck. And I was just thinking of washing and waxing and fixing a couple of those little things that needed attention.

Basically, I was wondering how insruance compaines decide when to total a truck? how much $$$$ of damage vs value of truck?

It took out entire drivers side of truck. Small dent in front fender, windshield, center cap(not sure how), door, sidemirror, extended cab sheetmetal, box side smashed in, fender gone, wiring harness ripped off, mudflap gone, metal bracket from fender rubbed groove in outer tire, and cracked tail light trim.

But the alumiunum horse trailer in tow didn't get a scratch.
Guy coming at me ran over what was left of my fender. 3 or 4 people saw it and NO one stopped. I was on side of road for 30 min and after some custom hacking, I was back on road. Drove ok, just windy in cab with huge gap at top of door.
I'll post picts later of carnage.
I really like this truck, but if its time to change, I guess its time.

every insurance company is different. it usually ranges from 65% (typically higher tho) of the value of the vehicle. my last bang job, was about 70% of the value and they still fixed it. it was all cosmetic tho, never had a direct hit, just a side swipe. truck actually drives better and has no air leaks now!

Im still battling with my insurance company . I hit a deer in sept of '07 and stil have yet to recieve the check. First they wouldnt accept any estimates that were sent in. so I wait nearly a month before an adjuster was sent out. He knocked down the damage to half of what it should have been and then took of anything that wasnt OEM parts such as my aluminum wheel that was broke, grill guard, lights, and side steps. They are covered in the insurance but they said the value of them is nothing after 2 years. Then they tell me they sent me a check which was less than half of the estimates and we never recieved it. This went on for over a month and a half. Told them to send to my insurance agent, he never got it. Finally got an attorney. Now wont send check until they have a paid reciept that the truck has been fixed. That is what I need the check for !! DUH!! Still battling with them. I will never go back with this insurance company again. Im looking for a better one. This is a nightmare! I have only claimed twice on damage in all my 30 years of driving.

I pretty sure that they will fix it, it looks all cosmetic. I'm just glad that It didn't get into the front of the truck or me and the horses would have been stuck.......and none of them were broke enough to ride home. LOL
I thought I remembered my insurance man saying something to the effect that if it was greater than 50% of the value of truck. Not sure. We'll see tomorrow.
Supposed to get estimate at one of their preferred shops, the preferred one I've used before is VERY GOOD, but kinda expensive.

Roughstock, sorry to hear about your luck, I hit a deer back in November with the front of mine, and man, you think your insurance you are paying for would treat a guy a little better then they do, but it was like pulling teeth!!! estimate was $4650,With a $1000 deductable, and they refused becuase truck is older then 5 years, and has more then 50,000 miles, so they can refuse the right to replace parts with OEM, they wanted aftermarket parts, and I had a 99+ sport bumper and grill that was estimated at $1800 with paint, the adjuster they sent out to body shop was a kid not even old enough to drink!, let alone know what the hell he was looking at!,
He did his own esessment and had the intercooler wrote down as radiator, intercooler piping and boots as radiator hoses, truck was a 98, told him about the 98 sport and 99+ sport being different, but he still put down 98 sport bumper and grill!!, tried to pass the headlights off as NOT broken, just becuase they were still there, but the lenses of the headlights were busted off, andmounting brakets were all busted up,, but they were still there!!lol and turn signal was gone! his estimate was $2975!!!!!!!! I was ******!!!, we went round and round, finally had to get pictures and prices off of internet and send them to him, so he knew what the hell he was looking at told him he couldnt buy a new a intercooler for my truck for under $850, he said he found new ones for $300,My repair man said to him, "IF YOU CAN FIND INTERCOOLERS FOR $300. I WILL BUY 20 OF THEM FROM YOU!!! found out they were radiators, he just cowards in his office!, these guys need to know what they are looking at before they go writing claims!!!!! URGHHH!!!!!!, OK, sorry, this is your thread!lol
didnt mean to vent!
Hope your inssurance experiance is better then mine......
time to find a nice flatbed for that dually!!!lol

Pictures of the damage

My company is good, No problems yet. Since I hit a deer, it was considered comprehensive, and not collision. So my deductible was only $250. Thats good. I reported this on Sunday Am to the 24hr insurance help line and I had my agents people calling me at 8am this morning. Check out picts below. It my first posting picts. hope it works

It pretty much took out every part on the drivers side. Expensive part will be to fix the box side.......maybe it is time for a flatbed. The door is poped out at the top the you can see day light. It even rubbed a groove in my outer tire. I'm gettting estimate at lunch today.

Hey, if they decide to total it, and you don't want to keep it, let me know what you can buy it back from the Insurance for.

It would be a shame to let that one go to the yard.

I just got two estimates. HOLY COW. The first was getting close to what I paid for it. $7551.34 and the second was $6212.80. Ive got that much in performance stuff and new parts/accessories/tires.

I was thinking new mirror, windshield, and a flatbed.
I can live with a dent in door and ext cab. This truck was nearly flawless before the deer vandalized it.

there are three things to consider when totaling a vehicle ACV actual cash value repair cost and salvage value. When the repair cost plus the salvage value exceed the ACV then the insurance company will total the vehicle.

Insurance called and asked me some Q?s. The said that before the wreck, the truck was only worth $7000, and that was before the high mileage adjustment(high mileage=less value). They would have to get back to me after the adjustment. Sounds like Its gonna take a hit. may be 5K?
If I had to go buy one of these, I don't think I could buy one comparable to mine(pre-wreck) for under $7K?
We'll see later today.

If they want to total it and you disagree with the amount ask them to find you a replacement for their offer. If they find one, it might be a bargain and a good purchase. If they can't find one your value goes up.

You may have trouble asking the ins co. to replace your truck as all they are required to do is pay you the fair market value. Having said that you can ask to see the documentation used to establish the figure they offered you. A lot of companies use an independent co.to do the evaluation. You should do some research yourself to be sure the acv is fair. Check with dealers, news paper adds, used car lots, car mags etc. Just make sure you compare apples to apples!
