RV style generators

I am getting a new Platinum 3 horse trailer with living quarters. And I need to decide pretty soon what kind of generator to put on it.The two options I have are a Onan microquiet 4000 or a Generac 40g.The Onan has a splash oil system while the generac has a oil pump and filter. That sounds like a better setup to me.But Onan has been around a long time and seems to make good stuff.(plus they are owned by Cummins)I had one person tell me that the Onan has a real sensitive carbeurator. Is this true? The Generac is about $1000 cheaper too.Any body have any experiance with these two units?Any help would be great,Thanks guys

The Generac is supposed to be quieter than the Onan.

I have the Onan and the noise isn't terrible, but it is certainly noticeable.

I wouldn't but either, buy a honda and you won't be sorry.

Onan has a bad history on their electronics and the generac is a hit and miss if you get a good one or not.

The original poster probably only has a choice of Generac or Onan for a built-in. I agree that Honda makes a really good standalone generator. Honda does make a built-in water cooled generator, but it has no noise shielding so I'm not sure how quiet it is.

Eveyone with the new generation of Generac generators really like them. They all comment about how quiet they are.

I have a Honda EU3000 and its noise level is 48Db . Quiet enough to run in a campground all night plus you can hook 2 EU3000's together and get 6000 watts !!

I don't really need a big one,It will be powering one AC unit and just some other small stuff.TV,Stereo, water heater etc.So the smaller ones will work fine. And it is going in the hayrack of the trailer so I am kinda limited on how big it is anyway.I really wanted a diesel generator but that would be kinda overkill on this trailer.Plus they are very pricey. So,I need to decide between the two.It seems thet both have their pro's and con's.Any more suggestions would be great. Thanks

Before laying down any money, be sure to have the specs on the AC unit with you (Start and run load.) and check to make double-dog sure the gen will start the AC unit. If you have to call the maker, do it.

The start load of the compressor's gonna be the biggest. Be sure the gen can support that figure. It may fall into the gens surge range, but that should be OK. Check with the maker to be sure.

You may do well to have a list of all the stuff you plan to run (with its ratings), and a realistic idea as to how much of that stuff you plan to run at once. . . . . . . . With all that stuff on, could the gen still have enough hiney to start the AC compressor?

You'll find the more expensive gen-sets will run in the 1500 ~ 1750rpm range (the use of a 4-pole rotor allows it). The typical, less expensive gen-sets run at 3500 ~ 3600 rpm (using two poles). The diesel engine (being inherently long-lived) fits the lower rpm unit just fine.

I've had 3 Onan Microquiet 4000 generators installed in my enclosed gooseneck trailers....all of them where installed in the overhang in a compartment which is next to the bed

Ive never had any problems with the Onan's other then the fuel pump givin out , which just gets replaced with an electric pump next to the gas tank

My current Onan has 4700 hours on it with very little maintenance needed

I have a Generac 5500 watt thats 2 years old I only use it for powering the house during power outages......its noisy and consumes lots of gas compared to the Onan
