Running the 1/2 inch line would be an noticeable improvement if the fittings on the compressor were 1/2 inch as well. I think you'll find the biggest restriction is the fittings themselves. You might take drill out the fitting slightly to improve the flow out of the compressor if you cant change it to 1/2".

In your case, it sounds like plumbing in permanent lines would definitely be overkill, but I would do it just because it's a cool project.
