Did AMC make anything that would be good for an off road machine, with mild mods?

There was a member on here that got a seccond gen for $500, needed about the same ammount of money in it before he could drive it, but he had a CTD for a grand.

But will you actually be able to save, or will you wind up putting all your money into the crawler?

Consider 85-89 4runners. 85 are EFI with a solid front axle, 86-89 have IFS but SA's can be swapped in easy. Stock 86-89's can be found around here for free up to $2500. They have removable tops and are built on a frame. The little 22re's aren't much for power but they're fuel injected and run forever. With all the toyota aftermarket, you can build the axles to be stronger than stock 35 spline 60 stuff. (I said to go with 60 earlier only because I figured you'd go with a jeep).

I forgot about that I have never really cared about Jeeps.

But I was thinking more along the lines of a 4x4 Gremlin...

Well, no 4x4 Gremlin, but they did make the AWD Eagle.

And I hear the stuff they made under the American General nametag is pretty good off-road too.

You know Iker, a 4x4 Gremlin would be very easy to do, since Jeep CJ's shared the same wheelbase and width as 1970-1976 Gremlins. A Gremlin body would fit perfectly onto the Jeep frame.

And, of course, installing a Cummins 4BT into a CJ frame has been done many times.

Altough you might not want to replace that AMC-designed 4.0 liter Gremlin-engine with a Cummins, I think that the AMC engine would probably give you less trouble.

Don't forget, folks: AMC WILL RISE AGAIN!!!

4runners are SWEET!! If I wouldn't have gotten this jeep for $300 bucks....I would have gone with a 4runner. Chevy 350's fit in them just fine!!!

From what I understand IFS doesn't get the articulation ability that a straight axle. Plus, with a straight axle, you have more options in size. Dana 70 or 80, or break down and buy military surplus 2 ton axles.

you got more options in lifting. There is only so much lift you can get with A arms.

That's why you use hydraulic shafts as A-arms.
