Practical Concealed Carry

While not a noobie (former Marine), I am just getting into concealed carry. I plan to carry my S&W Model 36 Classic snub nose 38 revolver. My usual attire is jeans & T shirt (tucked in). Am I going to have to change the way I dress to effectively conceal? I also want to have ready access while sitting in a car so, a gun in my back waist doesn't appear readily available or comfortable. Suggestions?

Pop, you may want to also post this over on the new sister site.

You may be into an ankle carry with that piece, she is kind of fat to do much with. Compact frame would give you more options, but I understand your desire to bring old trusty along also....

do you usually wear baggy jeans?

an IWB holster will work with a bit of your shirt hanging over.
a pocket holster works nicely too if your pants are big enough to get your pistol and hand in your pocket.

IWB is the way I am going with my .380 when I get my CCW.

I would get started before the new pres. starts office, no telling what he is gonna mess with on the gun laws.

Sounds like the ankle holster is going to be the only way you can carry without changing how you dress. I carry IWB in the front, but I keep my shirt out to cover the gun. SOB carry is really hard to conceal unless you stand up straight at all times - no bending over to pick up your keys. It's also very uncomfortable when you sit in a car.

IMO, and it is just that my opinion, an ankle holster is just not feasable because in the standing position you cannot be further away from being able to effectily draw your weapon for self defense.

IWB deep draw type holsters are effective in concealment even with a tucked shirt. It really depends on your body type as to what types will imprint with your current clothing.

Different body shapes make a difference too, and the cut of your clothing. If I wear an over shirt you can't tell I have a middle of the back carry or a hi- side holster. But when its colder I usually wear a waist lenght coat, Carhart Detriot Jacket, and would neet to go to a shoulder carry.

I think safariland has a line of jeans out with a built in pocket that may fit your 36, although a centennial may be a better chioce for a pocket carry cuz the hammer is shrouded.

It's not the easiest access in the lower back, which why it should be practiced alot. When dressed for warm weather, it's about the only way to carry without everybody noticing. That or a belly pouch. I don't know how anybody can stand the ankle holsters.

Wink

ahem, for belly people:

IWB to the space where your elbows naturally rest is comfortable and practical. got to have the practice of 1. quick defense within five feet
2. seduction of car/truck robber for vehicle or wallet including passenger attack mode or safety/protection

army MP on Embassy escort duty in 70s
law enforcement/corrections prisoner transport
debt collections/recovery tow truck driver
permit for new york city (hard to get)

been around the block, gained weight on most of it. inside the pant
frame grip clip on works best for me.

hubby dropped his personal weapon AT THE AIRPORT (try that now)
from a small of back holster AND outside 'glove' holder (clip came off)

go to the other forum, lots of good advice there! good luck, God bless and enjoy

plus, just remember, with a back holster someone can just come up an grab it. It sure would be hard to stop em. But that's only if it's exposed.
