Re:Power Outage
There is a huge outage in Detriot, Ontario, Ottowa, NYC, Conn, Ohio etc. I don't know how extensive it is either, but from what I hear, those locations are supposed to be on the same major power grid? It's becoming pretty big news here in the last hour.

ONTARIO? That is one massive area of population...thats an entire province and the largest population of Canada. Any feedback why? Actually thats a MASSIVE area of population in general where the outage is...that ain't good especially in this heat.

Here is some more information. They're saying it's not from a terrorist attack or anything.

This might be what your aquiantance heard about, from the MSNBC website:
"CNN reported that transformer was on fire at the Consolidated Edison plant in New York City, but Mayor New York Michael Bloomberg said it was not the cause."
There might have been a major surge before it went out or something, possibly causing the fire there.

The other scary part is now we can all see how much planning the Emergency Management folks have been doing over the last two years with all that $$$$$ that was thrown at them. :

Re:Power Outage
Hey guess what. Remember that fire at the substation you were talking about? The Federal Regulatory Commission said that the fire at that station in NYC caused a chain reaction in the system knocking out power to the entire grid that it was connected to. I just heard that on the news. You were right on in saying that it caused the outage, or that you heard that. I can't imagine it, but according to the FRC, it's true. They're calling it a rolling blackout, and it occurs when something like that happens, where the grid tries to pick it up and keeps overloading throughout, until the whole thing shuts down. If that's the case, I wonder how long it'll be before they can isolate the grid from NYC and turn the power back on.

Re:Power Outage
I just read the news and there is a story out that it started in Niagara Falls. Does anyone remember in 1965 when the entire eastern seabord was blacked out? From Toronto to NYC. As far as I remember the cause of that was never determined - and that was the days before computers. So far I have not seen anything in the news about this blackout.
I was in Toronto that night and had a ball. ;D It was a full moon night. And no, I did not do any howling at the moon, but without lights in the entire city it sure was bright!

Wasn't there a record number of childbirths 9 months after that outage too? I recall something on the news about that.
I really feel bad for all those folks in that heat. :-
