Political Correctness...What next?

Where will it end? Next it will be animal rights activists wanting to change the names of the Bears, Rams and Dolphins. How about the Cowboys....they were a minority group.

Are the Native Americans throwing a fit????? No? Then why would NCAA worry about it? Surely there is an end to it somewhere.

By God they better quit using the Razorbacks... the pigs are getting offended.

Lets not forget the Irish They're probably "fighting" mad!

I won't even go into the Gamecocks.... You can imagine how upset they are

Move On!!!....

Immediately after 9/11 this kind of stuff disappeared, then slowly everybody forgot what was really important and went back to worrying about this kind of stuff

If this kind of thing bothers you, then obviously you need a life

It's like the bathing suit calenders the ladys that are in them don't complain, they make a heck of a living off them. I keep all issues from 1992 hanging in my office. I'm doing my own thing with political correctness.

Well YES they are......Actually this all started a few years back( in the mid-90's) when seven of the larger tribal goverments filed suit in the US Courts over a mascot symbol that most of our folks DO find offensive..
The Atlanta Braves leering indian-head logo was the one cited in the law suit.
The suit was dismissed by the Federal Courts( in Atlanta BTW) as "friviolous".
Anybody remmember "Sambo's" restuarants? They were a national chain that used a african "bush-baby" logo....a little black man with gigantic lips wearing a loin-cloth with a huge afro and a bone stuck thru his nose.... The Federal Courts awarded the NAACP over 2.8 Million dollars for that one.....and the restaurants went out of bussiness, and I have never heard ANYBODY say that there wasnt a just reason for blacks to feel offended by that logo..What is the difference please? Why did Frito-Lay stop using the "Frito Bandito", when it was a very susscessful campaigain slogan?????
I have never heard any of our folks say they were offended by the team names or object to the use of tribal names, but the stereotype mascots.... well, one of you explain to YOUR kids that the image represented by one of those mascots isnt REALY what people think of them when they tell someone they are Native American...
or that the world doesnt REALY veiw them that way, its just "in fun"...and yes, thanks to the way american white society potrays Native Americans in cartoons, TV and things like sports logos,I have actually had to talk to my son and my neices about this, and I am not alone in that.
Its not a matter of the overzealous"political correctness" that is the butt of so many jokes,
its about racial prejudices and stereotypes that still permeate our society....
because this issue involves the most sacred of American Icons..SPORTS... it is sacreligeous to complain or comdemn it.
Again, its not the names, but the demeaning logos and mascots and what they say about white attitudes towards us as a people that is the core issue. The message is very clear..." You aren't important and you dont matter"
Like a guy actually looked me in the eyes and said to me once...." well, its not like native americans are realy a "race" are they......"
No , to most white america, we're realy not. We went extinct with the buffallo and therefore deserve no consideration as nations or as a race. After all, REAL indians lived in Teepees and beat Tom-Toms, right? and they're all gone now.

Ok I will quit ... but realy stop and think about how well received a team called the " New Orleans *******" would be... or how about the "San Fransico Slant-eyes", or the " San Antonio Greasers"???..whats the diff?

sorry but you guys pushed one of my BIG RED buttons on this one...Chris

I guess people could sue political cartoonest for some of the pictures they put of them in newspapers.

Chrisreyn,
I agreee with most of what you say. Anyone who has been through some of the Indian villages out west can see what we have done to the Native Americans. People argue that we have given them every chance to do good, but I disagree. We have done nothing but give them a place to live and threw money at them. I think it's getting better, but still has a long way to go. Our nation as a whole has not given the attention to the Native Americans that we have to the Blacks, and now the Hispanics.

Uhhhhm, If I remember correctly, our people HAD a place to live, I believe you now call it America.........their land was taken from them, and now those same people who took it herded them onto land that they didn't want and say they gave them a place to live.

Personally, I don't have a problem with most of the mascots or sports names.
However there are a couple..............

Let the names and mascots stay the way they are. Someday, some smart Indian is going to find that loop-hole, that lost legal statement, or some document that will allow him to say, "This is MY land. And I want it back... NOW!" When all the non-natives are forced to give up their property and go back where they came from or live in designated areas, then we can have a few 'mascots' of our own!

Don't worry, I'll set aside a few hundred acres of MY First Nations allocations to establish a 'DTR tribe'!

Until then, there are more important things to worry about!

I know, 'wishful thinking'!

I stand corrected and I apologize. No offence was meant.
