Talking Pics of Shops/Metal Buildings

Where getting ready to have a shop built here pretty soon, a 30x40, I want a metal frame for sure. If any one has any pics of their shop I would like to see them if possible inside and out, I might want to steal a idea or two . Just got a quote on the dirt work and pouring the slab foundation $6400.00. Now just got to make contact with a good steel suppiler and installer in the North Texas area. I'm open to suggestions.

Shops

Tony,
I went with wood construction (steel roof and vinyl siding), on a 30' x 60' with 14' ceiling, footers and block foundation last year. Have about 19k invested with neighbors help. It's a wonder what a little food and beer will do. Good luck on your project! We'll be watching.

Something to think about for electricals. Instead of 2 conductor wire run 3 conductor. You can run the Top and Botton outlet on each box off of a different breaker. This allowed me to run six outlet boxes off of one wire run ( total of 12 outlets, or effectivly 3 boxs per breaker ). Another thing this gives you is the ability to have a 220v outlet at ANY box on ANY wall without running any more wire. To do this, your breakers should be tied together (ie a 220v breaker, kills both circuits at once)

My building is 30x40x14 with a 10x10 and a 12x12 overhead door + a standard 8x7 door and a 15x14 door pre-framed in for future use.

Goodluck on your building

Shop size will all depend on just what your needs are.

I have built (2) for the Dupage County, IL Fleet Management
and am currently doing (1) for Naperville, IL Parks department.

Biggest considerations, will be things like underground, drainage, structural slabs, future considerations like lift placement, things like that.

If I were to do my own, I would have a room for loud equipment like compressors and pumps, insulated, and run a central line system. I just like hearing that crap run all day.

In floor or radiant heating is a plus as well, even wood burning floor heat systems , or oil reclaiming systems can be economical compared to ultraviolet heat.

Depending on your local code, any floor drainage may be subject to a triple basin as well so oil, etc. is not going into storm system.

Power wise, I would run a Bus Duct system, so the configurations could be moved and changed easily, and consistantly keeping higher loads.

For the Metal Building, I know here in Il and WI, places like Menards are reasonable, However I would suggest trying a National Metal BUilding supplier like Ceco or Varco Pruden. They have turn key systems, insulated panels, tech and customer support, and they can be bought installed or FOB.

I am currently building a new garage, that unfornutely wont have much of these wish list items, but I can dream cant I.

Tony T -I ended up with a 30 x 48 Morton Building with their insulation package. My wife liked the exterior design as it didn't detract from our house. I have 2 bays on the work side and the other portion is the "bench racing" fun side with the TV, frig, and bathroom just in case. For info go to the Morton site:
http://www.mortonbuildings.com/
They have been is business since about 1903 I believe. They're definitely more expensive but some of my other friends regret that they didn't spend a little more up front.
PS - The two garage doors are 10' x 10' and the ceiling is 12' at the walls and kicks up to 14' at the center for the lift. I have a storage platform with wide pull down stairs over the "bench racing" side to store misc boxes, materials and such. I have a full bath with shower in case I get run out of the house. The insulation keeps my heat and air costs reasonable. I added two of those shipping containers out back for the lawn and ag equipment. It helps keep the mud out of my shop. My JD 4600 tractor is in the light colored unit and the rust colored unit, (which I still need to paint), has mostly junk that I didn't want collecting in my shop. They are 8' x 8' x 20', can hold 30 tons, are reasonably priced and can be delivered on a rollback.
Just my 2 cents. Bill

tantruck, you sir have a garage to make anybody envious. That's a sweet setup you got there. I would have no need or desire to go back in the "real" house.

Holey Cow!!!

Tantruck that is freakin sweet!!!!!!!!!!! My brother's got a shop I thought was the best, but I think it's gonna be too big for me. I would love something like that!
Here's his:

It's got the office in the back, and all the tools you could imagine. Just a little too big for me (he's got 80 acres to roam though)

P.S. About how much did that building cost.....if you don't mind me asking? Very VERY VERY interested! Sorry to be a copy cat!

Nice set up tantruck, I can only think of a few instances when I would need to return to the main house with a shop like that!

Very nice.

It's a VERY tight fit height wise, length wise it fits with about 10 feet to spare. Everytime we take it in and out, I have to crawl up on the roof and pull the vent covers off and take a ratchet strap to pull the garage door up so it'll clear! It's a good thing he doesn't use it that much
