Patching a Fuel Tank?

Has anyone ever patched a fuel tank on a 2nd gen or is it even worth it? I managed to put a hole in mine tonight and am trying to find a used one. But if it can be patched I'll do it. Thanks for any info.

a patch is very iffy to keep from leaking. I have welded cracks in plastic tanks before with great results. I use a red hot nail and run it down the crack and then use a circular motion to spread the molten plastic and it seems to work good .I have even done this on one of my personal truck 5 years ago and its still good. if its gas buy a new tank! diesels not as explosive

Call a few radiator shops. Some actually do "Plastic welding" It is actually very similar to welding metal but with plastic. The key is to have the correct filler rod.

Find a marine supply place and pick up some Marine-Tex. I've fixed a lot of things with this stuff. This stuff is amazing. http://www.marinetex.com/marinetexepoxyputty.html

If you know any one in the pipeline industry get you some Protal 7200 two part epoxy. Its what is used to field coat welded joints of pipe. Clean and rough up the surface a bit. Mix and apply.

This stuff is forever and will not leak.

Buy a new tank....if you do a little research on the Internet, you can find them at a good cost and you don't have to worry about it leaking again and it most likely will

It comes from being an Old fart......already tried, failed and learned stuff the hard way, so I am just passing it along

There comes a point in your life where you finally realize that it ends up costing you twice as much to do it the cheap way because you end up doing it twice!

I tried it...Used some sort of plactic weld in the hole...Roughed up the surrounding and fiberglassed the heck out of it...I thought for sure this thing would not leak...Sure enough...year later the thing started leaking...Pitched the tank and bought a used one that didn't have a hole...

Very true. I try to ask people if it's cheaper to do it right the first time or cheaper if you do it twice?

But I also come from a "I can fix anything" type of family and in my younger days I tried all the cheap ways. Now I'm like you and realized it is easier (usually) to spend a little extra, but only do it one time
