diesel libertys are getting good ratings.
i know ya said no jap crap and thats good but the new pathfinders (im not talking armada) and Xtera's are nice, have good mpg and 4X4 and also have whats called by some as the "best drive train" in thier trucks.
i agree with buying american but when you ask for good looks, a good drive train, good mpg and four wheel drive it doesnt really screem AMERICAN!
the nissan is built in TENN if that makes a diference
or if you want to stay American (the best choice) the new tahoes are wicked COOL have good fuel economy 15/21 (i think) and ya cant beat a VORTEC for dependability we have a 1-TON van and get 15 with a Vortec so i bet you can get a little better with the Tahoe + it has the new e85 and thats not to much when you can make your own.

Get her the Wrangler RUBICON, add some toys and then go everywhere your truck can't The new 4spd auto (RLE42) is awsome, it takes a shatload of abuse without complaint....

If she's serious about a Jeep she might look into an Unlimited. The extra 10" of interior space will help with the kids. Coming soon is the next generation Wrangler. There will be a 4dr Wrangler. The JK (Wrangler) will also be wider and have electric windows. I'm not familiar with the 4spd Auto offroad. The 3spd Auto's have proven themselves offroad.

First the wrangler's old 4.0 is a good motor but it doesnt get over 15- 17 mpg unless your really trying or you got a "good" one. As far as the wrangler being lighter than a grand.... um not really. The fact that they are even boxier than the grands will keep it lower than 20 most always. The stick is the better choice over the old 3 speed autos no doubt. the 5 speed vs the 4spd auto eh both are good but a manual should win the mileage but not by much. If she wants one, you really should wait to check out the new ones. Only sad thing is their sticking a minivan engine in there. .
heres a link to some info on the new one.

Dont buy a jeep looking for mileage unless it has a diesel (only the liberty can be had with one domestically right now but look for that to expand soon)
