Opinions on jeep needed
My wife is wanting to ditch her 04 Quad cab Hemi (tired of 8 mpg) for a jeep wrangler. I told her if she got a wrangler it had to be a stick cause a auto jeep is wussie. She dosn't nessarily agree. Opinions???

The auto is a 3 speed auto. Good strong trans but my TJ will always be a 5 speed with a hand throttle. I've got a Liberty CRD as well and it is a fine Jeep. The things to watch out for on the 4.0 Jeeps are that the exhaust manifolds tend to crack and the rear main seal WILL leak at one point or another. Other then that they are great

If she's looking seriously at a wrangler, she'd better drive one first. It's a long walk from a Durnago to a Wrangler when it comes to creature comforts. Plus, the short wheel base of the Wrangler will add to the deterioration of ride quality when compared to the Durango. I think the newer TJ's have a 4-speed auto and there's an available 6-speed manual in the newest models. As for the above comments about 8-10 mpg, I'm not sure what jeep you were driving...maybe in low range or something? My little lady has an '00 Grand Cherokee which is much heavier than the Wrangler, but with the same engine and she has consistantly pulled down 19+ every tank with 70% in town driving. There's no reason a little Wrangler can't wring 20mpg out of the little 4.0L

All the newer Wranglers have a 4-speed (with overdrive) auto - it's been several years since they came with a 3-speed. As the post above said, the manual is now a 6-speed. My '98 Sahara (which I bought new) has never been in the shop and has never needed repair and does not leak! The mileage can vary - pounding around in 4-lo can bring it down to about 12; extended freeway driving at 70mph brings 16-17mpg. But it can easily top 20 mpg when taking it easy down the back roads.
But as for use as a daily driver - there are lots more comfortable rigs out there than a Wrangler. Better ride, better power, better mileage, better handling, and a lot less noise. And a lot more room inside if there's a family involved. The Wrangler is wonderful in the rough stuff - but only you can decide if the tradeoffs are worth it.

My wife drives a 2005 Liberty 4x4 with the 3.7 gas motor. It averages 16mpg with mixed highway/city driving. It is alot more practical as a daily driver than a wrangler and rides much smoother.

I had a wrangler 2 years ago, was driving on the interstate at about 65 and had to hit the brakes, thought the thing was going to go out of control. I got rid of it the next week, never again, so i have a jeep liberty CRD that my wife loves and I drive to work, gets 22-24 mpg combined and i love the little diesel

The problem is 90% of her driving is in town. Those Hemi's like the open road even then the best it ever did was 17 on a 350 mile road trip completely unloaded. She is wanting somthing that she can look cute in going to and from work and dropping the kids off at school (She got used to everyone looking at her pretty little Hemi Qc), but it also has to be a 4x4 and get decent milage. She dosen't want a mini truck and we are trying to get somthing reasonably priced without being jap krap .
