Nuclear power plants, and home purchase

Whats the general opinion of purchasing a home that has a nuclear power plant as a neighbor (appx 2 miles) Looking into a house that fits my needs and price range in an otherwise awesome area.

I'm about 3-1/2 miles from one, I don't lose any sleep over it.

You may want to check out the operations of the company, some have been less than honest in their operations ( putting radioactive water into the ground, etc. )

I wouldn´t buy a house near a nuke power plant. Too many reports of people (children!!) getting cancer. I wouldn´t take that risk. But then an ex GF from Belarus (White Russia - close to Chernobyl/Ukraine) didn´t seem to suffer from radiation. At least from what I could tell.

This site is under pretty close watch, local waterways are tested 2 times a day, and the water supply to the house is city, not well water. If it was well supplied, thats another story. Thanks for the opinions, keep them coming.

I got married across the lake at Wolf Creek in Kansas. Awesome warm water lake and great fishing too. I wouldn't worry about it one bit. If the thing goes....the closer you are the better. They're regulated well enough that I wouldn't fear living near one at all and too boot, they pay really well too.

Have a good one.

I live just within the Evac zone of one. I think it is 5 mile radius and don't loose any sleep about it. I've been inside the plant and it is impressive with the security, and the way it is run. Lots of failsafes. The "steam" coming out of the cooling towers isn't radioactive. The water used in the generation of the steam for the turbines is in a closed loop. The plant has their own drinking water supply and there isn't anything out of the ordinary or over the regulated limits. Keith

If you live in or near BayCity Texas you have nothing to worry about. Saftey is top priority and it shows thru on inspections and for the outstanding record. Residents have had nothing but good things to say about STP.

they can build one in my back yard if it would lower my energy bills

IMO there's much more to worry about out there than that

I wish I was as fine, as those who work the pipeline!

I'm with you guys, I wish we would build a bunch here. we have a pretty good trade balance with the rest of the country, just one more thing to sell to the rest of the nation. I have no problem with them at all. They basically run themselves these days.

I would not worry a bit, I would be more worried about underground pipelines, or rail lines personally.

I believe it's a 10 mile radius (published in the safety guide they send out). I am within 6 miles of one, and like ktpauley, I don't lose any sleep either.

I actually currently live about 7 miles across the bay and slightly north from the same plant that neighbors the house I have the bid on, just wondered what people thought of being closer (2 miles or less)

Thanks for the replies folks, seems as though people generally feel the same as I do.

I have been inside the plant due to my job. They constantly run situational drills. I also live about 3 miles from a State Correctional Facility. I don't loose any sleep about that either. Keith

I live about 50 miles from Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant and 30 miles for a coal fired power plant. Real estate taxes in those two counties are the lowest in the state. They pay their share!

And I live within 1/2 mile to the entrance to the state mental hospital. I don't loose any sleep over that, but then they keep the bars on the windows secured and the doors locked to keep me in!
