Not a question of "If" but "When"

Ok, all motorcycle riders know you will be in a wreck someday, right?

I've been riding bikes since I got my license.
Have had 3 bikes in that time, and up till yesterday, I've layed them all down except the current one.

Yesterday, I got caught up.

Stupid stupid of me to attempt, and I payed the price.

Going to dinner last night, Wendy's is on the other side of the road.
Very small "island" in the middle of the road, 1 - 1 1/2" tall is all, no problem when I have the truck,
not true on the bike.
One has to either drive over this island, or go 1 block to the next light and make a U-turn and come back.
I guess I didn't have the front wheel turned enough,
so it glanced off the island and the momentem tipped me over.

I have a nice patch of road rash on my lower leg (I wear shorts 365/24/7), little bit of rash on my left elbow, and I don't know what I did to my foot, but I was sure it was broken.
It either got bent forward or backward by the foot peg, or the weight of the bike came down on it sidways, but it hurts like H-E double hockey sticks (self moderation).

I was able to continue on to Wendy's, pick up my meal while fighting the urge to pass out in the line, left a couple blod drops from the elbow on their floor, then make it back to work, shifting with my heel, and hobble back inside the building and enjoy my meal.
Finished out my shift, but no way I was going to be able to make it home, unless I stayed in first gear.
Called mom and had her pick me up, she called a neighbor who rides bikes to come along and get my bike home, then took me to the ER.
Half hour later, yes one half of one hour, midnite to be exact, they have examined me and sent me limping home with a number for an Orthopedic specialist to call if it doesn't feel better in a couple weeks.
X-rays didn't show anything amiss, so they cleaned up the road rash and gave me an ankle splint to wear for 2 weeks (it isn't my ankle that hurts, it's the bones between the toes and the leg that hurt like heck, but the splint seems to help a little).

I think I'll tack a poll onto this, how many motorcyce riders have kissed mother earth while riding.

Limping off to find some more ibruprofen.

Oh, so much for riding the bike to fight the high price of Diesel.
I'm stuck with the truck for at least a week, if not more.

Glad to hear you weren't seriously hurt. You oughta get a dualsport if you're gonna hop curbs.

Glad your ok. Out here in Az the chance you survive any type of accident with a bike is less than 25 percent due to retarded divers. Although I have never owned a bike I have ridden plenty but I dont plan on buying one anytime soon.

Glad to hear there was no permanent damage.
Those milled streets are a pain too as they leave a 1/2 to 1 inch "step" that will throw you if you aren't careful.

Been down twice on the street. (many more times in the dirt)
Shorts?......I never ride with shorts on.
First time, 198ish Yamahahahahaha XS-850.
Found out the hard way that the dark strip in a intersection where I was turning left wasn't a pavement patch, but slime that dripped out of a trash truck. Might as well have been axle grease. Absolutely no warning, no wobble, just BAM!
I was only doing about 15 MPH, no traffic so getting run over wasn't an issue.
Kicked free as soon as I felt the bike go, bike only slid a few feet, breaking the clutch lever.
"Float shifted" the rest of the 5 miles to work, shutting it off at stoplights, starting it up in gear to get going. Jeans & leather jacket saved my hide.

Second time, Old Blue ('76 Harley) Been out riding all day, was about a mile from home at 11:00pm when a "Cager" ran a red light, clipping my front end, depositing me in the middle of the intersection. He stopped on the other side of the intersection, waited until he saw me stand up. I took two steps (running) toward him when he (wisely) took off. Cop responded after two young guys who were sitting waiting to turn, witnessed this. One bailed out of the passenger side to help me & called the cops, his buddy took off after the "Cager". Never caught him though.
Cop said the guy was lucky that he took off.
I agreed, as that probably kept me out of jail that night, and the other driver out of the hospital. About $5,000 damage to the bike.
Again, jeans & leather jacket saved my skin.

There are two classes of riders:
Those that have "been down",
and
"Those that haven't "been down", YET

I was like five when I slid I went down on my dad's '47 Knucklehead...

It was night time going up the Ortega Highway, I was riding in front of him, and the engine died. Of course my dad, the electrician, has his bike converted to magneto, so the headlight died as well. If you've ever been up the Ortega Highway at night, then you know that it's not the place for your headlights to die...

He couldn't see where he was going so he laid it down to avoid going over a guard rail.

Not that I remember it that well, but that's the way he's always told it...

So does that count? [I]'ve never laid it down, but I've been laid down...

The 3 times I've layed down have all been low traffic, slow speed, and I was the only one involved.

2 were in the winter, vehicle d'jour not running, so had to ride the bike to work in the snow.

Then yesterday.

I know I'll be involved in a multiple vehicle someday, I just try to avoid it on a daily basis.

Yesterday's scuffle was on this bike.
1998 Honda Shadow 1100 A.C.E Tourer.
7 years old, bought it new, I knew it was only a matter of time before it happened.

I did a quick look over last night, prior to handing it off to the friendly nieghbor, and didn't see anything amiss.

Have been too sore to look in the daylight and give long look over.

I'm off work for the next 3 days, so I'll have plenty of time.
Yes, I went back to work last night, and showed up today, can't ruin that 7 year run of no sick days.

Exactly. Used to say the same thing when I was teaching MSF courses.

Have had my share. Some not so bad, a couple of humdingers. Remember one I had in California. After CHP took me into the ER, the doc asked if I was one of those "he men" who wanted to be stitched up without meds. Told him if he touched me without a healthy dose of pain killers, he was a dead man.

After he was done stictching me up, he asked how I was going to get home. Response? "FLY!"

I layed the first one down, a gold wing when the front tire blew and I rode it down the highway like a surf board. Thank god for all the crash bars. The next two were both kids that ran red lights and hit me. I walked away from all of them with all my body parts intact, but decided I had outlived my luck. Would love another dirt bike but I am done with the street.

I wish I could convince my brother to sell his crotch rockets. I am going to have him look at this.

Mishaps like this are never good but at least it was a result of something you did. Probably the biggest reason I dont ride is because of all the crappy drivers on the road. It doesnt matter how good of a rider you are - there is always the "other" guy to watch out for and try to avoid.

Im glad you are ok Jerry ! Road rash is real nice when you get in the shower.

Sorry to hear about this Phox. It will take a while for the stiffness to go away, but it is a good reminder of just how dangerous these can be. Wife told me no more bikes after I laid our GoldWing down. She works in the pharmacy of the local hospital, always worried about the calls for a bike accident. So I sold it, and got a Nova instead. Glad to hear you will be all right in the end.

Jerry, glad you came out of it relatively unscathed. I know your leg hurts, but that is a blessing compared to what could of happened

I wrecked one many years ago when a guy in front of me realized too late he was about to drive past his left turn. I was on a Honda 750, he was in an El Camino. Tractor in the right lane, I looked once at the tractor on my right, looked back the EL Camino was standing on his brakes wanting to make a left turn.

I plowed into the back of the El Camino, rolling partially over the handle bars before they broke. I landed on my back in the back of the El Camino with the right handle bar still in my hand. Broke my right leg, and wrapped the front wheel of the bike around the engine, totaling the bike.

Stupid part was my helmet was tied on the sissy bar, just real lucky the handle bars held long enough to make me roll into the bed of the El Camino. CHP Motor Cop that showed up on the scene was the same one I out ran through a field about 2 weeks prior. He laid his Harley down in the field trying to catch me on a speeding ticket.

He recognized me right away and started laughing when he asked if I needed an ambulance Karma will get you every time I still rode for years after that, with a few close calls, but that was the worst of the bunch.

TOP OUCH!

Phox OUCH! Glad you are okay man!

I ended up spread eagle on the hood of a "73" Firebird in 1973 after the dude pulled out in front of me and stopped. My girl friend was on the back and took my place. I tore up my shoulder alittle, but rode the bike home with the handle bars 45% to center. Got the bike fixed and got $500 for pain and suffering. Didn't get anything for brain damage!

You know what they call riders that don't wear helmets?............ ORGAN DONATORS!

Be careful out there!
