no nonsense Marines
A 'touchy-feely' CNN reporter, while interviewing a Marine sniper asked,
"What do you feel when you shoot a terrorist?"
[IMG][/IMG]
The Marine shrugged and replied, "Recoil."
Barrett M82A1, reach out and touch someone.

my boss said today:
"the marines are like the Navy's own little 'army'
the Army has thier own little Air Force,
and nobody is going to give up anything,
the Navy won't give up thier Army,
the Army won't give up their Air Force,
and the Air Force won't give up those nice golf courses"

My hero was a Marine. He enlisted in 1939 at the young actual age of 17. (he lied about his real age). He was assigned to the First Division in WWII. He landed on Guadal Canal, 7 August and was relieved by the Army on 7 December. He was "scratched" by an enemy bayonet, hit with a spent round and blown out of a jeep by a land mine. Malariea sent him state side. After the war they cut him loose, but he reenlisted again for the Korean Conflict. This time because of Malariea he pushed "boots" at Camp Lejunea, NC. He is my Dad.
I guess he had seen enough doing all that, because when it came time for me to join up he made me promise to not join the USMC. For you see, that was in 1967 when we were in country fighting another war and I am his only son. I went into the Navy for five and a half years. It wasn't until I met "a few good men" that I fully appreiciated what the had done for me.

Here's to your hero, and all the rest out there (like Lary).
One of the friends I try to spend as much time as possible with is a 20+ year vet. He spent entirely too many years in Nam in the Corps doing things that regular people would cringe at hearing or flat out wouldn't believe. The nicest guy in the world but the one person in the world I would want standing beside me when the excrement hits the oscillator.

Who better to send in to beard the lion than some grunt without any sense? I don't think I would fit in a spider hole but then I have no desire to crawl into one anyway. Don't know if it is good sense or a healthy sense of self-preservation that most grunts seem to be lacking
I just read a first hand account of one guy's time in Iraq - 'The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell" by John Crawford - for those who have not experienced it this should be required reading. It is raw, not necessarily politically correct, but it is compelling reading.

Go easy on us grunts here yall! Me and some fellow Marines were talking about this last week and the interesting thing is, nowadays, a lot of junior marines, grunts included are the smart ones, with a couple years of college and maybe a degree, whereas 5 years ago, everyone was fresh outta high school. There are still plenty in the Corps like that now, but a lot more "educated" enlisted Marines than there used to be. But, then again, there are still those that would lose there head if it wasnt attached to them.

Remember, Tommy Franks started out as a grunt and ended up a 4 star! He was Army but commanded and respected a lot of "GOOD MEN!. If you really want to understand Marines, read "The Flags of Our Farthers" by Bradley. I was two years Army in Nam and have a son at West Point but got to love the Marines!
