I leave my key in the ignition all the time. I always figured someone could steal my vehicle with it or without it. Unfortunately theives aren't the brightest around here - they smashed my window and stole stuff out of it without even having the courtesy of trying the doorhandle first!

I was wondering if ignitions that require a diode on the key would turn the engine over at all, or allow them to start for 5 seconds and then kill the engine. That was never addressed in the story.
