New Tacoma?
Have a buddy who is looking at buying a new Tacoma with the V-6 in it. He said it is a new 4.0 liter engine. Does anyone know if it is a brand new engine, or has it been used in other Toyota's before and they are just starting to put it into the Tacoma?
Anyone else got experience with the new Tacoma's? Want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly.
Thanks,
~Rob

The 4Runner and Tacoma are both based on the Prado SUV that Toyota doesn't sell in the states. I know they've been using that engine in those for a couple of years, at least. I don't have any first-hand experience with it, but since it's a Toyota I wouldn't personally be all that worried.

it is a new engine to the tacoma. they switched when the new model came out. They have been useing it in the 4runner for a few years know. It is a great engine, as with anything toyota makes, the only thing that scares me with it is the VVTi. Varable Valve Timing It changes the valve timing as you spin the engine faster. They have been using it in the Lexus since the late 90 so i guess it is an ok thing. I haven't been around the 4.0's much but I've got a 2000 tacoma with the 2.7L 4 cyl and it has been one of the best trucks i have ever had. I have 170,000 on it and have done nothing to the truck or engine. I did the front brakes at 130k and I just did the struts last weekend.

My gal has a 00 prerunner with the 3.4 and auto. sounds like a new engine came out. Hers has 100K trouble free miles. My only gripe is valve adjustment, it set up like a motorcycle with shim and bucket adjusters, PITA, otherwise if hes not more than 5 feet tall and dosent like wearing hats he`ll love it.
