need some driveway/asphalt advice..any asphalt guys out there?

hello all...i need some tips on my future driveway...i am having a 4 car pole barn garage built out back of my house and i need to build a driveway, just grass now. i plan to keep it stone for about a year before the asphalt gets laid down i just do not know how deep to dig and what to use etc...i was thinking a 5" dig w/ 2" ballast on the bottom and 3/4 " trap over top..this may be over-kill or not enough i really do not know...any tips as always, are appreciated

I just put in a drive last fall, used crushed limestone on bottom then topped it with #4's. When its wet (REAL WET) the #4's seem to push into the crushed limestone. This is almost what was recomended by my builder. He thought I should have topped with #2's, but I wanteded to be able to drive cars and the garden tractor on it with out worrying about tires. I really like it so far. It is now a pretty hard packed lane after only one wet winter and spring. (I would do it the same again)

Typically a 4" to 6" base layer is put down, and 4" of AC. depending on your area would dictate the prep to me, wet or dry? if you have a base failure it will take out the AC as well ,so good prep is a must. Thats how we do it here in Cali. Hum.... maybe thats why the roads look like they do here. Seen better ones in TJ.

Also if you can spec HL3 for your driveway. Rougher stuff but more durable. HL3 fine is usually driveway grade.

First, figure out what your finish grade is gonna be.
Dig down 6" or 7".
Put down some sort of processed gravel at a depth of 3"below finish grade.
Fill with stone, usually 3/4" to finish grade.
Over time this will compact to a depth just below finish grade.
When it's time to put down the asphalt, grade the driveway to 3''
below finish grade, always compact.
Put down 1.5 inches of binder course.
Then put down 1.5 inches of finish.
These are compacted depths.
So when you figure gravel for driveways, add 30% for compaction.
With asphalt, Figure about 1/2" per course for compaction.
Hope this helps.
