Navigate with Droid - kills it?

I have been looking for a new GPS unit, and the more I read about using your cell phone, and it having the latest up to the minute maps downloaded,

and it showing a picture of hte location in street view,

i HAD to try it. got a $19 Scoshce mount from Wally World,
and used it for ~3 hours.
had the SPRINT cig lighter plug plugged in whole time.

got home, turned off Navi mode, left GPS on.

plugged it into laptop USB to download some pics. shut lid on laptop when went bunkie

get up next morning, phone is DEAD. tried three different chargers

new battery is $50 / and on back order, won't be in for few days.

tried to post on DROID forum, it won't let me.

just wondering.

the phone did AWESOME as a Navi system, if I had been able to dim the screen while driving (was fairly bright at night) I would have been 100% sold on it.

the wife talks on her phone & facebooks on hers while we drive, so mine is not used much.

I use mine all the time with no problems, the phone HAS to be on the charger the whole time or the GPS`ll kill it in short order (must use mucho lectricity). I also keep the gps function OFF if I am not using it as it is a battery drainer even in standby mode.Phone is an htc if it matters.

i maybe just stupid, and left my phone in Navi mode in the house.

it was powered in the house, but you NEVER know what thing will do when on a USB plug.

my work provided the phone, and they ordered me a new battery today.

htc evo 4g something or other.

Mine worked great drove to Cincinatti and back but kept it plugged in and set in the proper mode. If you leave it on navi when it isn't plugged in it will kill it pretty durn fast.

Been using it on my Thunderbolt, same app as my brother's droidx. I just leave it plugged into the car charger and it runs awesome. Only thing I miss is the vehicle speed off my other GPS, but the phone gps is nicer. I turn the brightness down and close all my apps when not in use and I haven't any any battery issues, like were posted in all the user reviews. Picture is so nice, it's actually downgraded a little by the screen protector.

post up how to turn the brightness down. mine was very bright.

i had it on the charger the whole time, (the SPRINT OME charger)
and on a USB charger once in the house.

the charge indicator did not even blink on the phone, so they just got me a new phone

of course, the phone lady left my $50 8gb SD card in the old phone...so I can barely do crap on this one.

Menu- settings-brightness. Mine's verizon. If you don't have it, get an adavanced task killer app. When you're done using the phone awhile, you selct that app before you put the phone in stand-bye and it closes all open apps to save the battery. You can also pick and chose tha apps it'll shut off.

I had similar problems with my t-mobile pulse. I found that my phone with the navigation running needs more than the 500mA that is supplied over a standard USB from a PC and most chargers.
I now use a Blackberry car charger, this one has 1100mA, so it has enough power to run the navigation and still charge the battery.

HTH

nah, the Air Force took over the military junk yard..and now they don't have anything manly. just truly JUNK junk now.

as far as the phone, i am on my third now (1st died, 2nd charging port broke)
the battery in the first phone was mediocre, had to charge it every evening & over nite

the battery in the second was a trooper, you could go a whole day and charge it first thing next morning.

the battery in the third one...is a POOCH....i keep it on a charger all day at work...and it's low by evening, and flashing red next morning, just near death.

i forget it too day, and left it at home...and guess what...it won't take a charge now. no lights, no nothing. will not turn on, even when plugged in.

i think i will go buy a $50 battery from the Sprint Store, and see if it has a warranty, in case it craps out.
my work just gets a whole new phone, which seems neat...until you have to get it all set back like you want it.

it's worse than Win7 to get it back personalized.

anyone else losing batteries?

update: looks like the batteries are CRAP:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/19770..._surprise.html

I've heard that the EVO's battery life sucks." It's true: Early reports have suggested that the EVO 4G suffers from a case of premature dechargation (that's the polite way to put it). Remember, though, capacity and performance are two different things. It appears 4G usage puts a serious strain on the battery, which is likely a large part of the device's, shall we say, "problem."

http://www.switched.com/2010/06/04/s...till-an-issue/

The battery seems to be the major problem for the Evo. MG Siegler at TechCrunch says, "it's almost unfathomable how bad the battery is,"

Burns was so frustrated by the battery life that he called it a "deal breaker."

If you absolutely must have the latest and greatest smart phone and are a Sprint customer, we suppose the Evo 4G is a no-brainer -- as long as your idea of "mobile" is being able to move from outlet to outlet.

My droid X displays the vehicle speed when in dock mode.

Well this sucks, I just ordered that one for the wife Monday. John, one thing about Sprint and there exchange. You might buy a brand new phone but when they exchange one you get a rebuilt phone. I had to call and raise a stink with a supervisor to get a new one. When it came it did not have the latest updates like they said it would and was a different color. I gave up at that point.

Try Tiger Direct next time. There are several other places you can get a much better deal on SD cards.

i 'think' i ordered a "3500mah extended battery htc evo 4g"

the seidio brand is ~$50
http://www.handhelditems.com/seidio-...-p-150790.html

other brands are about $8.
my $8 one should be here soon (soon as the boat from China arrives...)
