Yeah, you got it right, the media pretends to know all and tell all. Often their reports are ignorant untruths as the link above. To support their point a reporter feels compelled to make up something.
Well read citizens know when they've been misled or outright lied to, but many citizens are not well read. I'm amazed how many people get their info from a single media source such as CNN and repeat it as truth without question. I'm thinking about the reports of the 14 soldiers that were killed the same day in Iraq, how many different variations I heard of that story all from people wanting to promote their own agendas. Campaigners for 2008 mostly.
CNN used to be one of my favorite news channels but since they were bought out by Time-Warner, CNN the TV news is not much more than a springboard for selling other Time-Warner enterprises. Unless they're covering a disaster, a standoff, or a police chase why watch or read them?
