You'll get no argument from me on Phil Keaggy.

Not only can he play electric as well as it can be played, but his acoustic playing is in a class by itself.

He was, and is, my personal guitar hero and always will be #1 in my guitar heart.

So why my nomination of Derek Trucks? Because slide is *incredibly* difficult to play well-- dang near impossible to play as well as Trucks does. Slide playing gives you NO help with intonation-- it's like violin or steel guitar in that the frets aren't a factor.

So I guess part of my newfound awe of the top end slide players is the fact that it is so unreachable for me.

I can actually u;play a lot of PK's stuff. The portions that I cannot are still attainable IMO, just would require targeted, dedicated practice.

On the other hand, the slide playing that Trucks displays appears utterly unattainable for me. I put a slide on my finger and I might was well have never played guitar.

So the question of "who's the best" is really just a simple case of "who connects with YOU the most?"

For some Johnny Cash will be the best. Others would say Van Halen. Others would be impressed by the flying fingers of Yngwie Malmsteen.

So *your* favorite guitar player is the one you like the most. There's no objective standard, and that's how it should be.

Heck, I could make a case that Junior Brown is one of the best EVER!-- hehe

Man, I like Junior!

Cool

It was Stevie Ray Vaughn that got me to pick up a guitar. God bless his soul. RIP Stevie.

Nobody mentioned Sonny Landreth yet, and what about the absolutely astounding Dick Dale?
