Metal detecting

My father-in-law just bought some land out in the country and is always on the lookout for "treasures" that might be out there on/in the ground. He's talked about metal detecting before, so we were considering getting him a metal detector for Father's Day. Any guidance or recommendations from anyone here with this as a hobby or job? I know the prices for equipment run the range from cheap to high dollar, so I wanted to make sure we were looking at the right things without going overboard.

I've been considering one as well. There's a couple treasure hunting shows on the tube right now. Garrett seems to be a favorite on them.

He says they all swear by them.

Probably because Garrett provides them for use on the show.

Give www.kellyco.com a call. They handle lots of brands and a lot of accessories. They can guide you into what you need. I have two older Garretts. The main thing is to learn what the machine is telling you. I've seen guys with old machines find more stuff than guys with newer fancier outfits.

Geeze, this is awfully high tech. In my experience, if metal is at ground level I usually find it by kicking it with my big toe, resulting in a deep cut that requires stitches. If it is above ground level, I typically find it with my forehead, resulting in a deep cut that requries stitches.

You might notice a recurring theme here

You're not as tough as what you search for?

We have an older green one, not sure which brand, but like earlier advice, once you know how to use it you can use any kind effectively..

We find a lot of cast iron stuff and lead around my dad's place, from the old logging campground most likely... no gold yet!

I have seen a lot of MD's in the past in the parks and stuff around here.

That Diggers show really "let the cat out of the bag" so to speak as for firing people up to go find stuff. Public access land is probably still the best place to find stuff you can keep, I would think...
