Maine trailer tags in other states ??

I live in western Md. and I see a TON of locally owned trailers around here with tags from Maine. What is the deal. Is this even legal?? I have seen them on just about every kind of trailer. Horse trailers, dump trailers car trailers...
can someone fill me in on this secret??

Probably apportioned. They're allowed to do that normally, if part of the company actually exists in that state (suppose to be the main part of the company) and a lot of times, leased or contracted trailers as well. Here anyway, if not apportioned, the vehicle is required to be registered in your resident state.

Trailers aren't apportioned . Companies from other states give a Maine agency power of attorney and that lets them legally register their trailers in Maine .

We've done that for 25 years or more, it's cheaper. Also unlike Ohio and other states, you don't have to screw with stickers. The idiots in Ohio make you apply a new sticker several times a year on a commercial trailer. One comes in december or january and says "don't affix in cold weather" (your gov't at work). They also let you buy a tag that's good for 10 years, so you bolt in on and you don't touch it again. I'd say that less than 5% of all trailers tagged in Maine have ever actually been there. Maine makes madd money and we get less headaches.
