? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

Luke -

Not completely unexpected, but I read on another forum that the truck V10 is officially discontined. Is this true? A real shame - Dodge has no crew cab, and now no big block to compete with Ford and GM? What are those crazy Germans thinking?

I LOVED my V10 - a great engine.

I think what he meant was there's no big cube engine to compete anymore

but I don't think they sold too many .......dodge claims 75% of it's HD ram sale are CTD's soo the remaing 25% makes up all other motors .......and I'm sure a lot of them were 360's

perhaps they feel the 5.7 hemi will do the job

I know around my neck of the woods you almost can't give a big inch equipt truck away ......first thing people ask about is mileage

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

As of today the option for the V-10 engine is still on dealerconnect and able to be ordered. We have had no comunications stating otherwise but they often don't tell us these things till the last minute. I would hate to see them discontinue the V-10. I think it is a great engine. I had a 96 that I put 150,000 hard miles on and then I sold it and it is still running today. I just drove one of our used ones home last night. Its a 2000 3/4 ton regular cab 4x4 with a 5-speed in it, and man will that thing haul some major a$$. I find that a lot of people are scared of V-10 engines because of the fuel milage. But I put a lot of miles on a Dodge V-10 and I'll tell you what, those darn things don't use anymore fuel than a 360. I think it is because a 360 is workin its little guts out the whole time, but the big V-10 doesn't even break a sweat. These V-10's will run at a very low rpm's, they'll lug really well, they'll surprise you. I wouldn't be affraid to own one again.

I was never more happy when I got rid of my 2500 V10 for the 3500 diesel. I could not get more than 6MPG towing and I only got about 8 empty... : I think that whole truck was a lemon, but it killed my impression of the V10. I'll stick to the diesel.

Tony

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

I'll chime in here.

the V10 in the Viper is a killer engine.

Lots of low end torque that will surprise the driver in any gear....any gear.

The low red line with the 3.08 rear axle are really benefitted by the low long torque curve.

I can see how it would work in a truck but the milage in the Viper made me think a truck would get worse mileage so I opted for the diesel over the V10 option (plus longevity, longer distances between scheduled maintenance and having owned a diesel truck before also kept me thinking diesel). And thankfully so.

Tony, your truck must have been a lemon or you must have a REALLY heavy right foot. The one I have been driving is doing anywhere from 10-14, depending on how fast I am going. I was amazed while driving home last night while going down the interstate I decided to see just how fast it would go. I got up to 100 and I still had LOTS of pedal left and I got scared and let er go back down to 80.

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

Ya you must of just had a bad one. All in all, the Dodge V-10 is a good engine. Lots of power, quiet, smooth running, and really no worse fuel milage than the smaller V-8's. The Hemi is quick, but it will not pull like a V-10 will. You have to keep it wraped up to a much higher rpm to do the same job, while that big 488 cubic inch hoss will just lug on down the road in high gear. I sell some V-10's to guys around here who do a lot of stop and go running. Some farmers, and loggers who want the power to pull, but don't want to stop and start a diesel are going for the V-10.

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

I have heard similar stats to Luke's concerning the V-10 and its mileage. The few around here that own them are getting around 14mpg. I know some people, like them, do not want to mess with diesel or its smell, and like the convenience of pulling in to get gas anywhere they want and not have to look for stations carrying diesel. For them, the V-10 is a good choice.

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

Luke, thanks for the reply. I agree with everything you said. I had a 96 1500 shorty, singlecab, with the 360. Except for the 4x4, the smallest lightest fullsize Dodge. That 360 got 11 mpg! I cannot image I would have gotten more than 10 mpg in the heavier 2500. Plus, it would be a real dog. :-[

My 97 2500 V10, Club Cab, 4x4 got 9-10 mpg! You are correct, the 360 is working way hard, thus will get poor mileage. Plus, since it is working harder, it's life will be shorter. I have never understood why ANYONE getting a gasser went with it, especially since you got an upgrade to the 47RE tranny as a bonus. The mileage tradeoff, if any, is slight, not enough that it would make a huge monetary difference, unless you REALLY rack up alot of miles. But, now Dodge is pushing Hemi horsepower, and horsepower is what sells these days, not torque, apparently.

You are correct in that people have a misunderstanding about big-inch gas engines. You sell Chevy also - how is the 8.1 selling?

Don't get me wrong - I am now a dieselhead through and through (yes even though I drive a PSD!) However, I have been toying with the idea of trading my 2000 Neon (which I use as a hackaround vehicle; has on 18,000 miles) on a used V10 2500 4x4 to use for a fun vehicle. How many miles on that 2000 you drove yesterday?

Yes I sell Chevys too. And the 8100's are not selling very well. They are having oil consumption problems. The one I have is a 2000 3/4 ton, 4x4, SLT, V-10, 5-speed, trailer tow, fog lights, travel convenience package, infinty speakers, rear sliding window, mopar tubes, a gooseneck hitch, brake box, and 73,000 miles on it. It still looks new. I sold it to a friend of my dads new and he gets a new one every 3-4 years. Just traded it for an 03. It is white with silver bottom. I want $13,500 for it. I'll post some pics of it tomorrow, so you can see just what kind of caliber truck this is. Its one of the nicest used heavy trucks I've had in at least a year.

Re:? For Luke S about the Dodge Ram V10

Luke,

I was wondering if you knew about the possibility of a HEMI V-10 to replace the existing 10. I know that the 6.1L HEMI with an expected 375HP/450TQ is a go(TruckTrend ). Hopefully they'll make a V-10 to go along with it.
