FWIW for now my everyday is a 5 or so year old Toshiba Satellite, 20 gb HD 512 meg memory, all it will hold. Does what I need it to do running XP PRO.
For school wife got a Dell latitude 520 about a year ago. 80 gb hd and 1 gb memory running XP PRO. Works great. She to it to Seattle for her trip so she could do school work.
I have a very old Dell latitude CPX that I used for work. It was out in the rain some times. bounced around running the GPS system in the work van. Still runs strong. It is runnin XP pro.
Lot of good laptops out there. Dell also has refurbished and returns that can be real good deals. Lot of choices.

I bought a Toshiba in April. 160Gig HD, 2Gig Ram,T5200 processor. Came with Vista loaded. It was hard to find one that didn't. So far, so good. There's been quite a few Vista upgrades. "Most" software will run or they're coming out with Vista compatible versions.
I was one of the suckers that bought Windows ME. Vista is better than that but that's not saying much.

Don't get one with Vista, look for an XP model, I bought one a while back for my wife (Compac) and picked one up for my daughter yesterday (HP). Get at least 1 gig memory and more if possible. They do run slower on wireless, I compared the 8 meg download test and plugged in download speed was 712 kb/sec using wireless its about 540 kb/sec. I have the 600kb/sec high speed. The salesman yesterday said people are returning Vista laptops and trying to get XP ones, apparently Vista uses just about all the memory just to run itself leaving nothing to do any work with. Don't get a Sony battery they were catching fire.

My thoughts on the Sony battery thing was that if looking for an XP model you may come across some older models that may still have the older Sony batteries in them, and some electronics dealers are like used car dealerships!
