lets lay down paradigm for next generation of smart cars.

I was talking to an old timer the other day, he said old cars used to have 3 lights on the back:

-green - on the gas
-yellow - off the gas (coasting)
-red - on the brakes.

and Volvo now has a smart braking system,
and one off the car makers (mercedes?) had an algorithm that measured how FAST you stomped on the brakes, and doubled the initial effort.

got a blue tooth system to sync my cell phone to my computer
probably $50

got a Infra red repeater system,
probably $80

so why not have the next generation of smart cars do this:
-have an Infra red transmitter on front, rear and sides
(since IR is directional, this provides locational data)
-have bluetooth
(gives high data rate transfer of data and allows a "group" of cars to talk)
-have the ECM/PCM interface to the Bluetooth/IR communications group, to say:
"on the gas" "cruise set to XXXmph" "off the gas" "coasting"
"emergency braking maneuver" "ABS engaged in braking maneuver"

just thinking out loud.

Big Brother is gonna kill us, but this could really be useful..

i would envision the IR link to say nothing more than "blue dodge truck" or something.

but the IR would Identify all the cars you are physically near (the european style side marker lights would hide the side IR transmitters)

and the blue tooth would allow the cars to talk, and the eqpt could basically draw the cluster of vehicles you are in.

I don't know if you could incorpate the "distance measurign system" Volvo has into this to make the group of cars move "as a pack" at one speed.

we will need this type of stuff soon, as more and more people start to multi-task as they drive.

everyone in this town is on the cell phone.

a few women are doing makeup

we see one person a month eating something like a bowl of cereal or something.

you can bet it is coming, though.
(probably first in the "land of fruits and nuts")

i saw a tractor trailer hit a school bus while both were slowed & stopping for a stop light.

it's crazy out there.
