Leaky alkalines

Anyone know a trick to clean up the mess left by leaky alkalines to hopefully salvage the electronics they leaked in?

Also, any secrets to avoiding this altogether besides removing the batteries during storage. It's a drag for regularly used stuff.

Thanks

I don't know any tricks but most of the battery companies will repair or replace you equipment if you call them and explain what happened. you'll have to send it to them for inspection. I've quit buying Energizer batteries because of the leaking problems with them.

I have used vinegar on Q-tips and cloth to clean up flashlights and radios. Than I used some spray electrical contact cleaner to get rid of the residue (it evaporates quickly).

dont store batteries in anything.
the only think I keep alkaline batteries in is a small maglite I use almost daily. Even my truck light, I pull the batteries when Im done.
All batteries leak, if the gasses remain around the battery, it causes the corrosion.

Good thing I read the thread. For some reason I thought this had something to do with Fiver's Speedo's.

Imteresting ... I have had problems with the Energizer batteries leaking in the last year or so also, used them for years and they were always good till dead.
They have leaked in a indoor / outdoor weather station, a camping lantern and a Mag Light. The weather station and lantern were salvageable I cleaned the contacts with Windex on a cloth and buffed them off with a pencil eraser then recleaned them with alcohol on a swab, they are both still working. The Mag Light was bad and would have cost me more to return for inspection / replacement than a new one cost so I bought a new one but LED this time.
What batteries have you switched to and how are they working out for you ?

Scotty, you are losing your mind. Fiver's Speedo's are rechargable.

Wonder how the Lithium batteries fare for long term storage.

I used Duracell for years with no problems, then Sam's started selling exclusively Energizer's. I'm moving back to the Duracell's.

Funny, the Energizers are what I have been using.

I am mostly worried about my laser level, which i have been taking the batteries out of since new.

I have two maglites that got ruined by weeping batteries, both had energizers.

Thanks for the comments.
