Laundered titles
I just read this New York Times article about laundered lemons.

I don't know about the validity of it but it seems plausible to me.

It is true. My brother bought a 06 Colorado and within six months they bought it back because of problems with the steering and suspension components. It had been in the shop at least once a week since it was new. Two weeks later it was back on the lot at the same dealer that he had bought it from. Talk about making you worry about buying a used car anymore.

My dads old secretary had bought a brand new dodge intrepid around and she had it for about three months and while on vacation at the coast they decided to bring it in to the dodge dealer there to have the oil changed before the trip home. Well turns out they could not do the oil change because the millage shown on title and what the service records showed were off by allot of miles.

Yes I have heard of laundered titles. A lot of Katrina cars have showed up in Texas with clean titles, and close inspection showed the flood damage. One of the TV stations did a bit on it.
