Or a variation on that idea, any old discharged fire extinguisher that has a screw-off top, empty and rinse it out, drill a hole and install a steel valve stem, add diatoms, screw the top on, pressurize from an air chuck, and spray.

Okay, you want an idea? Here's an idea; Gravity feed HVLP spray gun. We used to use one with the delivery hole bored out a tad to LIGHTLY sandblast brass pump impellers and/or housings prior to spray welding. If it will deliver sand blast sand, it oughta deliver powdered earth. And you can control the pressure, volume and spray pattern right at the gun.

Now he won't have a spray gun!~

yes I do have a spray gun. DE is very abrasive, I did not want to ruin my spray gun though, or modify it so it would only be able to spray DE.

Quit drinking??? Thats kind of a low blow don't ya think? Gee Wiz I was simply asking for help, and you chimed in with a smart aleck, demeaning comment. But hey, if that means I am easy to wind up so be it...

I am just trying to save some money and come up with a solution to a problem.

we use 40 lb pressure for the trees to coat even with wind blowing. about a 16 inch circle each pull/dispense.

Right now we only have 5 cows (and 5 calves). After I got laid off we had to sell most of the herd to keep things running. One of the reasons we try to take such good care of them. We only have 6 months left till we have all our debt paid off (except the house) which is one of the reasons I wanted to just rig something up, and not spend any money on the idea. We can experiment on five cows, and and when we have our herd built back we will know what works and what doesn't.

I think I could take a pastry bag put a cup or two of DE in it, wrap the open end around an air nozzle and just lightly puff air through it. Might be a place to start anyway. And very cheap and easy to rig up!!!

Using water is not really an option as it makes a huge mess (lots of clay and poop), and we would have to run two hundred feet of hose to get it to the chutes.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I really do appreciate the input!!! Keep them coming though!!!

Well that was just MY suggestion. And yes, it will ruin it for painting purposes.

And that's different from any other response I've made to you... HOW? I thought from some of your past comments to me that you and I were okay with jabbing each other back and forth. Guess I was wrong. Rest assured it will NOT happen again and I apologize for any duress this has caused to you.

ME? Troy NY??? ME??? Sorry, you have obviously confused me with someone else. I was born in Machias and raised in Merrimac. Didn't leave New England and go thru NY until I moved to Michigan in 2001. As far as past generations go, most if not all of my fathers side is from Machias, Eastport, Lubec or Turtle Island Maine. My mothers side were ALL from Barrington NH for at least 12 generations.

Maybe that was true back in the civil war days. Not so much now. Heck anyone south of Jersey has a southern accent now and says 'yall'. Yankees do NOT say 'yall'!

So that's when the dreams stopped.

Since easy has taken a back seat to cheap, fill an old, not currently in use sweat sock with the DE. You can apply it to the underneath and sides without bending over.

Somehow, and I am not sure how, they seem to know that they are being sent away, and get cranky.

Maybe the alien cow abductors have implanted mind reading devises in them, probably why they seem so disinterested in me after a couple of seconds...
