John Deere mower problem, need some help
Ok, i was using my mower today to pick up the leaves in my yard and about half way through (i have one acre) it started blowing out lots of white smoke. The lawn mower is a newer 100 series with the single cylinder briggs engine in it. I recently did an oil change, fuel filter, grease and cleaning of it so i can put it away for winter. Mower was running fine and has not had a problem in the year an a half of owning it. when it started blowing smoke i disengaged the deck and the smoke stopped for a few seconds. Then it would smoke off and on while i was driving back to the shed. If i let it sit and idle the smoke will clear and runs just fine. Anybody have an idea of what could be the problem? Thanks for any help!

Pull the air filter off of it and see if there is oil coming out of the breather tube. If so, then you have a blown head gasket. On an easier note, check the oil, too much will cause it to smoke when run on hillsides.

White, I did look to see what the intake looked like and all is fine, the tractor doesn't have alot of use on it. And it does smoke only if its leaning a certian way on a hill side or if i turn very sharp, I'll drain and refill the oil. The book, i thought said 2 qts of oil w/ filter, i'll double check that. I must have over filled the engine because it only does it in a few situations Thanks White for the help!

Could be the PCV check valve as well. Mite be letting oil buy. Could be the choke sticking as well. Check the air filter. If you where cicking up a lot of dust and leaves it may be pluged. I know from personal experiance that they will suck oil out of the crank case threw the PCV when the filter gets plugged.

No, air filter was brand new as of saturday. I will check the PCV but i'm pretty sure the crankcase was over filled since it only smoke like that on an incline.

Shoot! If it's a year and 1/2 old, take it down to the dealer and have them fix it under warranty. I have an L111 and had an issue with with it starting. There was a bulletin were a certain batch of motors got out of Briggs/Stratton with the incorrect valve adjustment.

Its fixed guys, I originally looked on the maintenance book at the wrong capacity. My tractor takes 1.75 qts and the tractor one size bigger is 2 qts. i drained off a little oil fired it up and ran it all over the yard for a while. The tractor worked just fine now. Thanks for the replies guys!
