It's official! Alaska!
Got my orders and it's finally set, going to Ft. Wainwright. I need to start planning the winterizing process. Been researching a lot, are oil pan heaters necessary or a good plus to have. I figure Fairbanks gets a little cool, might need it. Anyone on the forum from Fairbanks?

Come on up.....Lowest I've seen is -72F.....When are you coming up, reason being, you might winterize after you get up here. We have everything you need and plenty of people at Wainwright to help. If your leaving after 1'st of April a block heater would be enough.

Well it looks like I will be heading up in early January, I found some nice looking oil pan heaters, seem simple enough. Are there many plugs in parking lots?

You mean next year, as Jan of 09....Well that gives you plenty of time, to get ready...Yes almost everyone has plugins...I think the Base has theirs on timers. The pan heaters.... are they the flat rubber like that you glue to bottom of pan...read my sig too.

make sure to use silicon around the edges of pad...helps hold by keeping moisture/dirt out. I use duct tape to secure it tell it sets, tape will eventually wear off. Don't worry duck tape is accepted fprmal wear...
In 2002, the Wasilla Wal-Mart store sold the most duct tape of any Wal-Mart store in the world,

your going to love Alaska, the greatest place in America, hands down. The way the U.S should be, tough people, who look out for each other and handle things themselves. I lived in Seward a year and in Fairbanks a year, the coldest I saw in Fairbanks was -55 f. a bit chilly. I moved back to get my woman, we are moving back next year, right around the time fuel hits $8 bucks a gallon with my luck.

Congrats man,
I got my orders out of North Dakota finally. Going to sunny, and windy, Clovis New Mexico. Can't wait to get out of the perma frost.
Have fun in AK

Enjoy the aroma of Clovis, I grew up in Los Alamos, went out to Clovis quite a few times. I imagine it'll be quite a change from ND. I think it's pretty out there too.
