It's Friday night...
It's Friday night, I'm sick and I'm on call :P On the bright side I don't do much on Friday nights any more, I think I am feeling a bit better.... But I'm still on call (not that the pager goes off much anyway)
How does your company handle on call? what do you get compensated for carrying the pager??
We get $100/week to carry and 4 hrs@double for weekend call outs (I need to check the mid week pay)

Nothin', zip, 0, nada. It rotates and when it's my month, I gotta take it. When I get called it does put me into overtime, but not anything special. Sounds like you get a good deal.

Re:It's Friday night...
We get a 2 week on-call about 3 times a year. We get $100/wk for carrying the pager. I used to get paid time and half as well, but now i'm salaried, so i'm "supposed" to get comp time. :

Tony

Re:It's Friday night...
Tony, I was offered "Comp Time" before. :
I told them my mortgage company, grocery store, and utilities wouldn't take Comp time as payment, so I couldn't either.

Re:It's Friday night...
Ah, good old comp time. I get plenty of comp (123 hours as of yesterday). HOWEVER, the state has decided that no overtime is to be paid so that means that since no one can cover my shifts, I do not get to use the comp. Forget about taking the old annual leave. Good old Kentucky budgeting.

Y'all remember that our Govenor got caught pulling the old 'I am not having an affair and am not giving special favors" gag. Things have been pretty scrrewed up since IMHO.

Not compaining too much, since I do have a good job as far as that goes and others are still looking.

Ed

I am on call pretty much 24/7 too, but try not to answer the phone. I have a teen age daughter so ALL calls get answered. As far as comp time...........I dang near got fired because I refused to take comp time. They wanted me to take comp at staight time for O.T. I said NOT A CHANCE. BTW in MN "only the State of Mn and its political sudivisions may grant compensatory time in lieu of hours worked". in other words ILLEGAL. That is how I almost got fired. The other guys took the time. Our union contract forbids it and we loose out on retirement hours.
Tom

Re:It's Friday night...
6:15 Friday night my pager went off > - for a request that we had talked to the requester about on Wednesday AND Thursday. So on Friday evening they suddenly decide that they need a piece of equipment out of my lab to be in Knoxville on Monday morning : because they had a Product Specialist and Environmental Engineer showing up to try to fix the bug they are chasing.

30 minutes to work, an hour to check the equipment out and box it up, 15 minutes to Airborne (gotta get there by 9 PM) with a 72 pound case (and me with one foot in a slipper due to toe surgery) then 30 minutes back home. Not exactly what the doctor had in mind when she said to take it easy.

Comp time - that's a joke because I am salaried and expected to do whatever is necessary to get the job done. I like my paycheck showing up twice a month so I do whatever is needed. Of course, my wife hates my pager.......
