Sure wish I was home i would show you a few spots! There is 1000's of acres of public hunting within an hour or 2 of Des Moines. Stop at Frontier outfitters on 100th st in Urbandale and ask them. I am sure they could point you in the right direction!

thats a good idea. I always ask the guys at scheels and sportsmans, but I dont know how much I can trust tem.

I have the sportsmans atlas, which really helps out, but I dont have the time to scout out half the locations, so I end up just going there. and of course when you are duck hunting, you get there in the dark, and there are about 10 million people throwing out decoys. so I end up stumbling around in a marsh looking for a vacant spot, only to find none, then walk back to the car with a dog who is mad at me for not shooting any ducks its good times. today I drove for 3 hours looking for a spot, and I never got more than 25 minutes from des moines, thats how many circles I was driving!

Its been awhile since i have been into sportsmans, but the people that worked in the bow hunting area were the most avid hunters if i remember right. I used to know some of them, but they have all moved on, so not sure now. as far as sheels, i wouldnt trust a word that they say. I just havent had good luck with them at all.

I always had good luck at a place called bays branch. Its about 45 min west of des moines. But, like you said, that place gets busy too so its just hit and miss.

Good luck!!

apparently not.

I got up at 4 on saturday, drove in cricles for 3 hours looking for a spot, and ended up at jensen marsh. which would have been a pretty sweet place if it wasnt lined with people. I am heading out tonight, try and get some on their night time run, and then again tomorrow morning. anyone ever hit dunbar slough?

I'll tell you what. I am going to check out dunbar tomorrow morning. its about an hour and a half west of hear, near scranton. I will let you know how it goes. then when the second season opens, I will check in with ya, see if you want to go. the only person I know that hunts in iowa is my neighbor. he has 2 kids (young, the oldest is 2 1/2), so he saves all his hunting time for pheasant. so it would be nice to find some more hunters around here!

Also, lincoln slew (sp?) is a good place. It is just north of Bays branch, about 1 mile east of a little town called Yale.
