Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......

Drink holder? That's thinking of everything. ;D Hey, I hope your cap works with your stake pocket mount. As I said earlier, I was thinking of doing the same, except my cap wraps slightly over the side of the bed.( It's a Leer) So the mount would be in the way in my case. So we'll see how the fender mounts work and go from there. Nice job, Butch!

Do any of you have any "removable" ideas for the radio? If I were to leave the radio in my truck it would disappear on me.

soon to have 3500 HO 6 sp srw...

Well, the only thing I could recommend for you would be to install a rig with a detachable head. Many of the VUF/UHF along with some of the HF gear can do this. This way you can stow the radio under the seat out of the way. I wonder if they still make the old slide mouts from the 70's where you could pull the entire radio out?

Installing ham radio gear in these things..... is a piece of cake!

I started the installation this afternoon, after waiting out a week of snow, rain, and cold weather. For antenna mounts, I'm using the Firestik #SS-18N NMO mounting bracket. It utilizes on of the fender bolts under the hood. I fist attached the mount to the bracket, then sealed the underside with RTV to keep next winter's salt out. Running the coax and power inside the cab is a dream using the empty clutch grommet. It's the easiest vehicle I've ever wired, and there's still room for guage wires. Here's some pictures of the antennas, and I'll post some of the interior when I finish it tomorrow. I'll be QRV on 10m,6m,2m,70cm FM.

Here's the right side 10 meter antenna. It's forward of the BCB antenna to keep detuning to a minimum.

Here's the drivers side tri-band antenna. 10 meter is sent to the other side via a duplexer inside the cab.

I finished the installation today. It went extremely smoothly. THe power wires and coax's went thru the unused clutch grommet, behind the side kick panel, and exited at the slice in the carpet for the power seat connection. This is a shot looking in under the seat at the radio mounted on the right front seat bolt. Also shown is the duplexer and the excess control head cable.

...and finally a shot of the control head location. I thought it was a good location until I put it in "D". Then I realized that the **** obscures the display, so I'm going to move it to another location. There aren't very many to choose from in this truck.

I picked up an IC-2720H on Saturday. I couldn't find any easy spot to mount the faceplate either, so I ended up velcro-ing it on the top of the steering console between the hazard light switch and the speedo plastic. Radio mounted under the driver's seat. Using a magmount antenna for now.

Faceplate does obscure the grid heater dash light, and I have to sit up a bit to see the odo - and neither of those are showstoppers.

Yeah, I tried that location too, but came to the same conclusion. I'm going to try a RAM mount I have for another radio, and screw it to the either the top of the dash or the "knee panel" and see how that works. Good luck with the new rig.
